Painting essentials

A wet palette.
(You can make one with a sandwich box, some kitchen paper and some baking paper, see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=96mjmqWTPfM for reference)
I like to have some flow improver for making washes and glazes.
Allocate enought time to let everything dry properly.
Know when to stop, the best miniatures are ruined by going for 'just a bit more'.

Painting essentials

Blain87 wrote:
Just begun painting the first of about 12 units of Ultramarines.

I've got a selection of about 35 different paints, a selection of brushes and some brush cleaner.

What other supplies would you recommend, that you see as essentials when painting your own miniatures?

There are no hard or fast rules, and remember, everybody is different, so to what works for one person, won't work for another.

But this is what I use when painting:

corks and/or flat paint pots. Put some blue tack on them, attach your model, and it's easier to hold and paint. YMMV.

I've also got helping hands as well for holding miniatures, which have a magnifier glass with them. Handy for painting detail. Again, these are optional.

Green stuff for repairing gaps.

PVA glue and a suitable basing material like sand. Again, it's an individual choice.

A palette or mixing tray for mixing paints is 100% essential in my book.

Some people like to use a hair dryer for speeding up drying time, but go easy on this.

And other stuff like varnish, undercoat, the essential etc etc

Some people prefer painting in silence, others like me prefer the TV or radio to be on...

Hope that helps.

Automatically Appended Next Post:

WaveyRaven wrote:

DaemonJellybaby wrote:
A wet palette.
...

This, and good light are the only other things I'd consider essential.

Good post. I totally forgot about light. To the OP, if you're painting at night, and you don't know this, daylight bulb is useful, as normal lightbulbs give off a different light that can mess up your painting.

I normally paint by daylight so it's usually not a problem for me.
