So... help? Please?

Morning All!

After a few months of pretty much staying out of the gaming world and simply painting figures, I've decided I wanna somewhat dip into gaming. (Mainly because I can now drive. Warhammer World isn't very far away from me!)

Thing is - I know literally nothing. At all.

I really like Harlequins, that is pretty much all I can help anyone with. Please can someone give me some advice even on just how to get started, or a really basic description of how to play with those dudes? Or even another race similar to them.

Thanks in advance!

To start you need to tally a budget and work towards building a force up with a set number of points. Kill team is a great way to begin with a handful of Harlequins. All you need is a box of them and you are ready to play a skirmish battle! Kill team rules are available and there is a free set for each army on Heralds of Ruin. For enemies you don't need models if you are playing at home. How I started was by getting an old GW leaflet back in the day and squinting at the pictures on the boxes. 'Wow that Rhino looks cool, wow that Carnifex is big', but in the end I went for Dark Eldar because choice was simple and price was cheap! I used proxy enemies with spare bases to paper cut outs when I first began. If there is a gaming club near you pay them a visit, or if you are at Warhammer World see if you can watch someone play and invite yourself to take part. Right now I would hold off buying in bulk particularly the rule book. There is a new 8th edition on the way which will make it dead easy to join in. GW will be releasing a simple how to play rules on a page or so, alongside a new streamlined edition in a bigger rulebook. If the rumour mongers are true, new boxes of Harlequins will contain rule sheets. However take this with a grain of salt as it could be the end of the year before the new edition hits. I hate to say it but you can find the codex for all the elder free on the internet as a downloadable pdf. Download at own risk from dodgey sites!

I am sure other members can give better advice than me, but for what its worth I hope I have helped you

Hello and welcome,

You are lucky to live near Nottingham, Warhammer world has some fantastic boards to play on.
Although I suppose you do have to put up with that malcontent Robin Hood taking all your money every time you go for a stroll through the woods.

The Harlequins are definitely a cool faction, however they are quite pricey and are an absolute pain in the arse to paint so be warned.

GW are actually releasing a new faction of Eldar shortly called the Ynnari. They could be a better choice to begin with.
They are reportedly able to include units from all Eldar factions including Harlequins.
They seem to have a much kinder colour scheme to paint.
They will play a big part in the advancing storyline.

As to what to buy , a good place to start is a HQ choice e.g. an Eldar Warlock and two squads of 10 troops e.g. Harlequin troupe, Dark Eldar Kabalite warriors etc.

This gives you the minimum sized army required to officially play, although of course few people would have an issue playing with a couple of soldiers.

One thing I would watch out for is building a very powerful internet list right of the bat, remember that the goal is to create a fun game for both players not pound people into the ground.
If you do that you will never be sort of games :-) Good luck!

Start small. Get a rule book, which you get with most starter boxes. Watch some games. Ask questions. Often places have a builders league, where you start with a small force and work up month by month. Do not get overwhelmed! Recognize you are new and don't think you're going to paint your guys to golden demon standards right off! My secret is...have fun! Don't worry about winning or losing at first . Get involved, enjoy the game and modeling. Talk to people (certainly here on Dakka in the right forums for anything (maybe tactics for harlequins?)) I do think that is a tough very specialized army to start with...so look at the basic eldar and go with your Harlequins as an elite choice at first?
And...welcome to Dakka! Love the energy of a new player!
