Bases Question

Hey guys, so i'm currently doing this with my bases.. - http://imgur.com/a/QoXlP
I'm uses cork and modelling gravel to make the appearance of destroyed concrete/road/w.e and then cut up sprue to make the crystals.

My question is, I'm getting 12 destroyers and i'm concerned the cork/sprue may not work well on the bases. What do you guys think? I have no experience doing it and would rather not destroy a base trying.

I heard some people make their own bases out of plasti-board or something instead?

I may just keep them clear cause maybe that'll look nicer, not sure.

I know, I essentially asked for feedback on 3-4 things, but i appreciate your opinion/insight!

Re:Bases Question

You're worried that your technique won't work on the clear flying bases?

I'd suggest trying it out on a spare base. I don't know how long you've been collecting for, but asking around your gaming group should come up with one to try it out on.

An alternative would be to use 'regular' bases, cork'd-up, with the flying stem (the straight bit) of the flying base attached to it. The 40mm bases used to come with moulded circles for that exact purpose (i.e. find a scarab base, turn it over. See those round bits moulded on the bottom? Drill up through one of those on a new base and it'll be the exact size of the bottom of the flying stem).

Some example pulled from Google (not mine, ignore the giant thing saying "magnet"):
