Advice for a brand new player

Recently I have found myself getting very interested in the Warhammer 40k table top game and was watching many battle reports and really liking what I saw. However I have no clue on where to start and how to get into the game, but I do know that I want to first make a space marine army and was looking at the imperial fists or ultra marines to be my inspiration.

So the questions I have are; What sort of things do I need to get started? (equipment ,books ,anything and if you could link the items I will need that will be greatly appreciated )
How big should I make my army at first to get a real feel for the game and if I like the army I am playing?

Thank you all hope I can begin to join the lovely WH 40k fan base.

Advice for a brand new player

Hi there.

First, who do you know who you can play against? This is a big part of getting started.
If you have a club near you (see the clubs forum), arrange to go along and see them. Learn the game there. The UK (seeing the flag in your post) has lots of local stores with tables, or church-hall-type clubs.
If you just want to play against a mate, look at the various starter-sets, look at the armies in that set, and see who wants to play what.
Look at the Kill Team set, which has Space Marines and Tau in it, and the rulebook. It's a start to get the basics down, like shooting, assaults and stat-lines of the models and their weapons.
The Getting Started sets are cheap, and usually have enough in them to 'get started' with an army.
Watch a game, see how it plays out, find out what kind of army you like (shooty, stabby, vehicle-heavy, fast, etc) and find an army to go with.

To play, you'll need:
Models,
Dice (with maybe a scatter dice),
A tape measure,
Templates if you have weapons that go boom,
Rules (eventually),
Codex for your army (see what the box comes with)

As for models, proxy. If you have 10 models, and can pick 3 of them out when called to, that's a squad in almost any army. If you have a Space Marines squad on the table, they could be Orks one day, or Eldar the next. Until you settle on an army, proxy what you have. Then buy (or make) the right ones.

TL;DR Get to a club or store, and watch a game. Go from there.

Re:Advice for a brand new player

Hi there,

Welcome to Warhammer, I'm sure you will gave a great time.

Buying the Warhammer Kill team box is a good shout, get you some tactical marines, Tau Fire Warriors, the 7th edition rules book and the skirmish game rules all for 40 quid.

You are going to need paints, glue, dice and a tape measure to go with that as well though. Scenery might help too but you can always use some tape cases or books for the time being. If you go along to your local Games workshop shop then you can play games on there tables as well.

Best advice is to start small and work your way up, having a mass of unpainted models lying around can be bit demoralising and you might actually decide you hate marines but love Orks after a few games!

Cheers
Kroem

Advice for a brand new player

If you're dead set on what army you want to run, the getting started boxes are great. In fact, they're great even later on, as their price is extremely good. You can get tools for a good bit cheaper than the GW stuff if you look around. The GW tools are of good quality, but their price is... proud. You really need a hobby knife, some sprue cutters, some files for smoothing surfaces, and some plastic glue. I quite like GWs paint system, though it is pricey. I'll go ahead and recommend you get some green stuff and practice building with it, too. You can use it for simple gap filling at first, but making capes is a great practice exercise for people new to the hobby.
