Reasonable approach; you get a broad selection of stuff and the staples out of that, and you aren't falling into the trap of buying all the units that are powerful now and may or may not survive the update.

I might suggest getting just the Getting Started box and trying some Kill-Team to make sure you like the Tau before going and buying the rest of it, though.

SubCommander wrote:
I have been wanting to start a Tau Army for awhile now and have been wondering how to start off with it.
I was thinking of getting the:
Codex x1
Starter Set x1
Devilfish x2
Broadsidex1
Crisis Suits x1
Commander x1
Fire Warriors x1
Patfinders x1
Is this a good way to start off?

Might as well grab a second copy of the Start Collecting instead of a box of crisis and a box of FW seperately since you can give the Ethereal away and still come out ahead in savings.

You'll want more than 1 broadside if you want any though, but they're also rather expensive, so perhaps hold off on them. I'd replace the pathfinders with drones personally, while that's certainly personal preference (T4 and 4+ vs T3 and 5+ is worth the tradeoff in BS [which gets negated if you use a drone net]), you also get 2 drones in almost every tau kit and you can easily score a bunch of free drone units this way.

If you want to save some cash, you can also make a commander out of the crisis kit, but the new commander is also a fantastic model, so if you don't mind the extra $, I would heartily recommend it.

Otherwise, yes, the list above should be very easy to include in almost any list you make (though you could drop the devil fish unless you're intending to make the FW into breachers, though again, personal preference, I love breachers in 'fish, so I'd keep them).
