Sculpting banners

I have a question for anyone who has some experience with Green Stuff and similar products. I've got a couple of older metal Space Marine character models that come with backpacks with banner poles. I have to assume that GW meant for modellers to sculpt a banner to go on the pole themselves. I have next to no experience doing anything like that, but I do have some ProCreate putty that should work for this kind of work. I'd appreciate some advice, as I really don't want to screw this up.

Actually the banners were supplied with those old miniatures, pre-printed and made of paper. So you could just put a paper banner on the pole.

Regarding green stuff; I sculpted some banners for my Rebel Grots and, while they are nothing like some talented others, I flatten a piece of GS and cut a banner shape. Then apply it on the pole and twist it so that it flows a bit. For damage, you can try to cut small cuts on the ends, stretching the putty so that it gets that ragged look.

Good luck!

If you want to sculpt one, get two lengths of piano wire that are the thickness you want the banner to be. You'll also need a non-stick rolling pin. Dust the work surface and rolling pin with talcum powder, and put your piano wire in parallel lines with the putty between them (leave some room on either side). Then roll it out until you are just rolling on the wires, this will ensure even thickness. Let it cure for 30-45 minutes, then cut out the shape you want. You can move it around to give it some shape (ripples, positioning it around the banner pole etc), then let it cure fully. Once it is fully cured, use a file or emery board to smooth the edges. Hope that helps.

Alternatively, use paper or fabric in combination with white glue.

The glue makes the fabric or paper stiff, but it will be able to flex a bit. Primer sticks to that stuff fine. I used Vallejo Airbrush primer - with the Airbrush (or a regular brush for this application).

Another alternative is cutting a piece from a soda can, but I prefer paper or cloth.
