Splitting generally happens when paint gets to the ferrule (the metal bit holding the bristles) Don’t let that happen. Don’t overload the brush with paint, and rinse it out periodically during long sessions.

Get some brush soap. I have a puck of Master’s Brush Cleaner, but there are a few different types and brands. Hair brushes are just like your hair.
