I've painted an ultramarine using Macragge Blue/ Calgar Blue but it looks way too pale

Hi, so I basecoated in Macragge Blue, then painted a couple of layers of Calgar Blue from the Ultramarines Painting set, but it looks far too pale. I thought I might have used the wrong paint but I've checked online and it's the right colour, I know this sounds stupid but my marine just looks like the colour of Calgar Blue, shouldn't he be more...Ultramariney? The Macragge Blue base seems much closer to the colour I want.

I haven't glazed or inked (other than a bit of black ink around details) yet, will that make a difference?

Hi there,

What kind of effect were you going for?

Macragge Blue is standard Ultra armour colour, with Calgar Blue across the edges for a highlight. Watch the WarhammerTV guide for a good idea of what to do.

Hope that helps!

Well, crap. I thought that Base colours were always supposed to be covered with layers. As an aside why the hell doesn't the Ultramarines Paint set contain Macragge Blue?!?

Thanks for your reply, I'll check that video out.

You've learned a good lesson though! Layers can be put over base colours for better coverage.

I think that set is mostly highlight colours as well. silver and black and all.

And always remember to thin your paints. Happy painting!

Also, if you are talking about the recent Ultramarines paint set with the mini pots, they are not intended to be one stop shopping for a particular faction. All of those little sets assume you have the basic build and paint set, which has the 'generic' colors like Macragge Blue, Mephiston Red, Abaddon Black, etc. in it.

That makes sense. It would have been nice if either of the two people in the shop that I spoke to had explained that to me rather than assuring me that it contained all of the paints I'd need.
