I'm just getting back into 40k after quite a long absence. I am pretty familiar with the lore, but I have never read a 40k fiction book before. I'm looking on the GW website at the moment and there is quite a bit of choice!

So what would you all recommend as a good first book/series to get stuck into? I am not overly interested in space marines, so if there is a good book that focuses on eldar/tau/tyranid/imperial guard or the like, then that would seem good.

I'm just a bit worried about starting to read something, and then realizing that it references lore from other books previously that I have not read etc.

Dead Men Walking - it is about Death Corps of Krieg and the best guard novel IMO.
Horus Rising - first book in Horus Heresy series and also good introduction into the lore.

Seconded on that one, brilliant book. Really made me like the Necrons as well.

I also recommend 'The Carrion Throne' which is a recent release set on Terra.
