What is a good amount of power points for a small army list?

First, Welcome to Dakka.

1 power is roughly 20 points. Not an exact science, but makes for a good benchmark.

So a 50 point list is equal to a 1,000 point list, where things start to feel like an army. It’s what my FLGS was doing for our into to 8th games.

You can play smaller games, but they can be hit or miss. Hard to make a take-all-comers list, and you can end up with bad matchups. Although 500 point/25 power games on a small table can be quick and fun, although I’ve not done any that scale with the new rules. Seems like it should be OK though still.

Power levels in no way represent a unit's combat ability. The variance in some armies within a PL bracket is too great (Imperium armies), while in others it's just mispriced (Eldar/Ynnari).

BaconCatBug wrote:All using Power Level does is let your opponent get free upgrades.

Only your opponent gets free upgrades? I must have missed that bit of the rules.

For people who just want to build armies quickly, have roughly even games and aren't concerned with powergaming, PL is fine.

I cast my vote for 50PL, most of the new 8th edition action and new-player-friendly games at my FLGS has been played on that basis .

If you have 500 points of stuff, that's the size of game you ask to play against.
If you have a place to get a game, see what they say. Your opponent will have a points value, just as you do.

But, the rulebook has a lot on missions for imbalanced games.
