What should I undercoat and base coat?

Looking at Iron Hull grey from P3. And beaton purple.

Can you paint purple over grey or black?

Should I undercoat white black or grey.. Or undercoat black and base coat grey? Then paint purple. Or is a white under coat better.

While I love my Army Painter purple spray - the dropped bottle paint is watery and useless, where my Game Colour from Vallejo has excellent coverage for hand painting.
