Huh, you know what, ostensibly not. Genetically, they're 100% human (their implants are genetically engineered, but the Marine themselves is explicitly not genetically modified). Outright clone one and you'd just end up with a regular dude (albeit one that you know will probably accept Astartes modifications).

Perhaps what to go for, especially if it's illicitly cloned Astartes, is clones of the implant organs themselves. Rather than obtaining them from official (and presumably controlled/recorded) stocks you could clone the organs themselves from captured battlefield casualties, grow them in vats, and then implant them into whatever mooks you find running around the lower levels of your Forgeworld.

I'm pretty sure if they could clone bog-standard humans, then cloning gene-stock for marines wouldn't be any harder (they start out as human anyway. Humans from barely habitable worlds by modern standards, but still humans.

The implants come later. That's a pretty bad malfunction if you're cloning a male...

But the idea of cloning the implants themselves might be good. Instead of doing five or ten year cycles with sleeping slaves the Magos could produce implants faster, maybe in just a few months per batch. Then take some obscure Hive World no one cares about and just abduct whole spires in order to produce Marines without bothering too much about genetic compatibility. If people are on the lookout for telltale signs of large quantities of sleeping dudes growing geneseed out in the stix, they're going to be less concerned about some random dude cloning organs. Easier to maintain a facade of 'these are purely for medical research' or somesuch.

You don't see any irony in saying "bad scifi" on a 40K site? ;-)

Anyways, I still think some heretek could save time by cloning the implants themself instead of waiting painfully slow for a set of geneseed to mature so you can harvest the stuff for exactly one set of implants. It is two different things I'm talking about. The geneseed in a slave (or marine) takes at least five years to mature and that produces one set of implants (complete with two new geneseed organs). The tissue will still have to grow but you do cut out much of the five/ten years it would spend waiting inside a marine. And ofc, you can duplicate it far more.

As for why the AdMech wouldn't already do so who knows? Maybe it's seen as sacrilege of a perfected process, or is something only very few Magos can pull off?
