There are a bunch of the oldskool 40k grotz around but the models are kind of lame, I was thinking of probably going with the plastic goblins from WHFB and having some fun converting them but would love to hear other suggestions too.

I happen to have upwards of 60 of the old 2nd ed models that I got for dirt cheap, but they're not painted and I hate the way they look.

If I wasn't going to convert to KOS soon I'd buy the fantasy goblins box and convert them to use all the extra shoota bitz/models I have left over from making so many Slugga + Choppa boyz.

In fact I may still go that route, but I'm starting to like KoS a lot more anyway, more fun than moving hoards of models around. A lot more tactical too since movement and terrain is so much more important and you have the speed to make it work.

I like the noblars (is that right?) from fantasy. When I converted up some bull ogres into IG Ogryn the ones in the box looked like grot to me. I think the best rout is the Fantasy goblin set. I think there is a goblin rider set that my friend picked up for making his grot. It's the same as the regular goblin set but has extra parts to make them mounted. At least I think that's right.

...or I would just ask Hellfury to make you some resin casts of his. ...maybe resin anyways.

There are a few options...

I use the old second edition plastic ones, just because I had them there (My Ork army is a bit of a hodge-podge of current models, 2nd edition models and the occasional Space Crusade mini) with converted Night Goblins for wargear Grots.

GW are still selling the Gorkamorka grotz as 40K grots, which did look better than the old school ones.

Night Goblins work ok, but are a little large. The new ones might work better, if they turn out to be decent sculpts (not holding my breath)

Ordinary Goblins work for a slightly more feral look, and are a better size than Night Goblins.

But my pick, if I was starting over, would be Gnoblars. Tons of character, good runty size, and most of them would be easily convertible. Only real minuses are that there are only a limited number of poses (12 in the regiment box, 6 assistants on the various Ogre sprues which would work as Wargear grots but not as useful for regular grots, 6 (I think, might be 4) metal trappers, and the flying-kick companion to the Mail-order Ninja Maneater) and the plastics are quite fragile due to their skinny limbs.

I personally think the gnoblars look terrible. But then again, I just don't like the gnoblar models =)

Night Gobbos are awesome models, but I dunno, I just don't think they are very 40ky.

I have a mix, half metal grots and half 2nd ed grots. I got the 2nd ed grots in a trade, at the time I only had about 15 grots. I rounded out my metal grots to about 35 through trades and 2nd hand buyouts. I still need about 30-40 more though, but that is a huge investment that I just can't bring myself to make. I probably will go the goblin route, and give them better weapons, as they would be the biggest meanest grots and as such, get first dibs on looted weapons.

If you don't have any grots at the moment, one option is plastic thunderers, miners, or any dwarf without armor. I always thought that squat grots would be awesome. I miss dem squats =(

Some people have used a hodgepodge of models as grots, IG, Lizardmen etc to symbolize captured slaves taken out of the factories and to be used as grots.

RE: What do you use for 40k Grotz?

"I think there is a goblin rider set that my friend picked up for making his grot. It's the same as the regular goblin set but has extra parts to make them mounted."

The Goblin Wolf Riders uses the exact same sprue as the basic Goblin regiment. The basic goblin sprue contains both standing and sitting legs. The only difference between the two boxes is that the foot regiment box contains enough parts for 20 goblins while the Wolf Riders box only makes 10 goblins but includes 10 wolves, all for the same price. So, unless you want the wolves for some other project, the Wolf Rider box isn't the best deal for getting grots.

(Tangentially, if you wanted to make mounted goblins and had some sort of custom non-wolf mount in mind, the foot regiment box is excellent because you'd be getting 20 mounted goblins without mounts. Mine are mounted on fungus brew powered wooden rokkit bikes. Something for you KOS players to think about. )

The Ogre Gnoblars look the most grot-ish to me. Plus, they come 24 to the box instead of 20 like the goblins (common and night) so there's more bang for the buck. They do have fewer poses, but they still have more variety than the crappy looking old skool single pose. I suppose you could also get a blister of WFB snotlings and base them individually for some especially weedy grots. You'll get about a dozen of them for 10 bucks, so that's a pretty decent deal for metal miniatures.

I use the Fantasy Common Goblin set + a bunch of random crap like guns and sticks and stuff.
Yes the noblars are weedier than the common goblins, thats why you get more, but the common goblins are larger than the weedy goblins of the 40k universe, so that kinda pans out.
Nice way to squeeze juice from the snotling packs!
