Citadel Spray Paint Precautions?

Hey all,

I've started using the Citadel spray can paints for some of my models. I don't have a huge outdoor area to do spray painting, just a balcony outside my apartment. So I'm wondering if there are any precautions to take? Should I use a respirator?

Re:Citadel Spray Paint Precautions?

Typically you should always use an aerosol based product in a well ventilated preferably outdoor area unless it is made specifically for indoor use, e.g. spray disinfectant. Form your description, your outdoor balcony sounds like it qualifies as a well ventilated outdoor area. That doesn't mean you may not see overspray start to build up where your spraying and of course the higher you are the higher the average wind speed which may make using a spray paint very difficult.

With regards to respiratory protection, again typically if working in a well ventilated space combined with the frequency of using a spray paint and assuming your respiratory health is good then you probably won't need a respirator. That said, if you are sensitive to particulates, a dust mask at a minimum may be needed. If sensitive to the fumes and vapors, then a cartridge based repirator designed for fumes and vapors would be required. I argue the more vital PPE would be googles which will protect your eyes from overspray.

Otherwise, the other recommendation I can give is to close your door behind you while priming otherwise you will end up with a house that smells like paint.
