40K heresy space marines

Hi all

For the past 20 years I have fielded a 3rd company Ultra marines force before extending onto Tau and Imp Guard. While Ive had a lot of fun with these, I have always been interested in the earlier days of the space marines, namely the heresy period.

So as you can guess Ive been following the Heresy books. I was then very happy to see ranges of heresy marines being sold by FW and GW. So Ive decided to put together a Hersey period loyalist marine legion.

Now heres where I need some advice.

Theres a few routes as far as armour was concerned ranging from MkIII through to Mike and even early MkV. Im assuming that most had the IV but I keep running into conflicting opinions…. So my question is, what would be the safest armour variant for the heresy for my new marines to use.

Secondly, chapters…. Ive done Ultras, and Im looking for something else. I not from the lists that at least 2 legions have no records and this lead me to take on the challenge of coming up with my own. All was good till I started getting comments from various sources regarding this… Ranging from ‘oh its a look at me Im special’ legion to outright horror. Its left me feeling a little curious as to why people would think this and what the problem is with taking on the challenge of building something of your own in the GW universe.

Whats your views

salrye wrote:

Secondly, chapters…. MKIII and MKIV are fine for any Legion. If you really like the look of either, do it!

2. There are 18 legions to choose from, 9 loyal to the Emperor and 9 "loyal" to Horus. Each have their own special units, rules, and characters. Have a look through them before you decide to do one of the missing Legions.

3. There is also the Blackshield faction of Space Marines. Most are remnants of Traitor Legions that refused to turn on the Imperium and are now leading raids against their former legion and other traitor legions.

4. If you absolutely must do one of the Missing Legions, knock yourself out. They are your models, this is your hobby, so have fun with it. However, if you go to a Horus Heresy event, don't be surprised if you get the same looks that a Flames of War player might get if they brought an Ork themed army to a recreation of the Battle of the Bulge.

5. As to "Why?", there are numerous HH novels and HH FW books. There are NO Space Marines from the Missing Legions running around. The best rumor you get is that the UltraMarines swelled in size as an allusion to them taking on a portion of one of the legions. However, it is just a rumor. The Legions were purged from memory and better left as a nebulous, mysterious, "I wonder what happened to them" question that never gets answered. OR, people just want to play with what's in the books (see #2 and #3 above). Also, some people have run into That Guy at their game store that always plays the weirdo "Loyalist Daemon Army" or "Traitor Grey Knights" army and are just sick of his gak. Don't take it personally if your idea reminds them of something That Guy did once.

Just my opinion.

The Horus Heresy crowd is a little different than Space Marine players of 40k. In 40k, there's a lot more room for creating your own chapter, since the amount of chapters in the 40k universe, in the fluff, number way more than the chapters that are identified in the rules. New chapters are made all the time in the 40k universe. It was also an excuse to counts as in case your favorite chapter ate a huge nerf, which was a possibility considering how often the codices got released and re-released. The perks of being a space marine player is also a curse: you got regular updates to keep you competitive with the meta, but you also had to buy a new book all the time.

In 30k, the only room they give you is 2 legions (they don't make new legions all the time), and it is generally considered bad form (in the 30k community) to cite your legion as one of the 2 secret, unidentified legions from the fluff. They could potentially have been left unknown so that GW could one day reveal the secret legions, or for flavor, but they did, curiously, leave you rules for creating your own legion. They also have rules for shattered legions and black shields.

Prepare to take a lot of flak for what you create, but it is entirely within your rights to create it both as dictated in the rules, and it's also your game. Don't let the online 30k community bully you. Just make sure the finished product is well developed, no pressure.

The two missing Legions were created that way to allow players to make their own legions.
Fans, being as they are, transformed that good intention in "No, those two legions are sacred, nobody can create their own legion!"

30K is more like a Historical game than a more free game like 40k. So people take a good amount of effort to be as lore accurate as possible. For me that doesn't fly my way but I can respect the people that want to play like that.
As others have said is like playing Historical wargames with a custom made alien force.

Just a tip, use shattered legion rules for your legion, otherwise you have no access to any special units and rules that other legions, or base them off an existing legion rules-wise

It's different with a list legion, the actual process of building your physical personal army it is different than the process of building one from a normal legion.

Some people, and I know it's not everybody, but it's just an example, make a specific company or grand company from their legion. They have for example a siege or sapper company, with lots of shovels, or a reaver company from the sons of Horus. Some people use a modified color scheme, like Imperial Fists with partly black armor as a connection to the Templars.

The point of this example is that whether people do this or if they just make generic blood angels of mixed types and painted red, it's still implied that they are just a small part of the bigger legion that everyone is familiar with. Especially true with the shattered legions, these are just some individuals and there is a whole enormous legion somewhere else out there who don't even know your specific company's story.

When you make a lost legion army, you could probably benefit from showing that it's just another company among many, just like your opponents armies. The drama of the HH is that there is this greater brotherhood of all the space marines across all legions, and that there is a rupture in it. When you make a list legion you're othering yourself, you're saying your army is different from that brotherhood.

So if you are going to all the background work of making your own legion, it should be expected that you can also go to the same effort for your specific company, just the way those players with special sapper companies or aerial assault companies do with their official legion armies. You have to say this legion is themed as mesoamericans or samurai, and they specialize in psychics and horse-mounted snipers, but you also have to say that this specific company is an artillery company that supports other companies, and it has been cut off from the legion while on assignment with some other legion but has been ordered to... and so on, so that your army isn't being different for the sake of difference but is just customized like other reallly good heresy armies are.
