Battle Damage on Capes and Banners?

I'm finally getting around to painting my Primaris from Dark Imperium and I think I've decided on Imperial Fists. I've been inspired by this image from the cover of the Sentinels of Terra supplement from 7th edition to paint them as very battle-damaged. I've been (sparingly) drilling bullet holes in some shoulder pads and backpacks, and planning to paint on chipping, dirt and scratches.

However, I realized that my Primaris will look a little bizarre if they're grimy and bullet-ridden but the Ancient's banner and Captain's cape are pristine. I'm hesitant to start hacking them up with my hobby knife and don't know if it's possible to paint tatter onto them. Has anyone had any luck with battle damage on things like banners and capes?

I actually gave something like this a try last week.

Here's my feeble attempt (you may need to scale the picture to get a better impression how it looks on a miniature rather than a blown up picture):

In addition to getting darker folds I fancied painting a few worn areas around the edges by leaving streaks with little to no paint coverage. The idea is that the material isn't quite torn yet, but worn off so that you see less of the fabric and instead get a slightly see through effect.

Hardly an expert's work, but maybe it helps.
