Hello all - considering a return to 40k

Hello!

I started playing 40k in '95 or '96 and played that and nearly every GW game all the way to the start of 6th edition which is when my kid was born... I've been reading dakka for a long time as well (and thought I had an account from a while ago, but guess not).

Since then, I switched to playing X-wing because I could play on my lunch break with some co-workers. That got me into Armada (current favorite).

Since the release of 8th edition, I'm really tempted to get back into 40k. I played one game so far with Dark Angels, and almost played a game with my Eldar.

I'm leaning towards sticking with Eldar as I'd need too much new stuff for basically every other army I have (I don't feel like breaking out the IG, or whatever they're claaed these days).

My other debate though is should I hold off and go with Star Wars Legion.

Hello all - considering a return to 40k

I'd love to play both. But I don't have that many kitchen passes... =/

I've got too many armies for too many games that I don't get to play now... If I can do both for little $$$, then I'd love to do that, but I'm not expecting that will be the case.

Re:Hello all - considering a return to 40k

If you've already got a good chunk of models, getting into 40k is pretty easy. Pick a points value, play those games till you're comfortable with the rules and mechanics, then expand your points to get new units, new strategies, potentially new tactics, and grow to a size you enjoy playing.

Nothing wrong with playing 1000 point games if that's what you and your gaming friends like. Or going to 5000. Not my cup of tea, I like 1500 to 2000 myself, but that's what I'm used to.

IG are Astra Militarum... but Guard is good. AM is just GW's copyrightable name for them.

You can find the "rules" for the game. Don't buy the rulebook. I thought people were joking when they handed me a pamphlet with the new rules on it. They weren't.

Hello all - considering a return to 40k

40k is still 40k, just has rules that are easier to learn and use now. If you liked it back then you probably will now, if you have the mini's then why not?

Not sure how well Star Wars is going to do, sounds like a great idea, but I'm cautious of FFG. Never played their games because the rules style and mechanics don't appeal to me and looking at what X-Wing has turned into has not helped their case.

Hello all - considering a return to 40k

My problem with Dark Angels is that it seems that most of the new stuff (black knights, dark shroud, flyers, etc) is just much better than the older stuff I have - of I'm going to basically but a whole New army anyways.....

The rule book thing annoys me. I have that small rule printout. What would I be paying $60 for? Scenario stuff and some rules for detachments?

I did enjoy the game I played though. And it looks like I'm going to need to save up for Necromunda once a few more gangs are released =)

I've liked the FFG games, but X-wing is suffering from a bit of bloat.
