Building the Warlord titan

Hi guys, haven't been around in a while but I was wondering if there's any interest in seeing how the Warlord titan model from Forge World gets built? I know it's been around a little while but it's such a unique model!

I've been working on this model for a friend for some time and have a video series of it. If there's any interest I'll post more of the photos and videos. Happy to answer any questions, too! I've had to buy a few new tools and get comfortable doing a few new things but it's basically simply a bigger model of the type we're used to

So here's how the kit started - a big box in the trunk of my buddy's car:

He picked it up from the Forge World shop at Warhammer World in Nottingham, England.

Here's the unboxing video I did for the main body - it comes in two massive red boxes, if you haven't seen one of these boxes they're nearly 2 feet long and about a foot wide!

And because he bought all the available weapons, here's a separate video just for those!

There's several more videos in the playlist but don't want to spam the thread with loads of videos (unless you're interested!). I can also post pictures, up-close stuff, detail how I assembled the legs and torso, etc.

Re:Building the Warlord titan

Thanks! I'll be painting it real soon, that's when the videos get a bit more interesting I suppose but I did the various steps in case anyone else comes along and wants to build this thing. And I get better at the videos the more I go, I think

So here's the 'boring bits'

and the first build step was the legs...which did not go well.

The epoxy I used was too slow (chose the 20-minute epoxy for some reason) so a slow, sticky mess ensued! Gah. Thick CA glue did the trick though. All the various angles to deal with made it difficult...

Trust me, I had to quadruple check the leg assembly, they look so strange without the armor plates It's like a chicken had sex with an AT-ST from Star Wars!

And yeah but my friend isn't going to use this very often, this was a birthday present to himself, it will mostly be a display piece. I think it'll hit a table 2-3 times a year at most, between that it'll sit in a corner and look awesome.

BTW, he's going for the Legio Astorum color scheme, dark blue with flames coming up the legs. They're also called the Warp Runners, which sounds cooler to me. He doesn't want flames up the legs though, he's got an idea that should work out really really well.

I'll post the other videos I've done up to now later, it's fully built now! I'll be getting the first proper bits of paint on this beast real soon!

Building the Warlord titan

Yeah nice looking scheme. If I ever get warlord would love to borrow it but too bad it's known loyalist titan. I doubt I ever can afford TWO warlord titans so I want it to be usable both alongside Sons of Horus and Blood Angels

Reminds me of Legio Victorium except flames in addition.

Hopefully we'll eventually see pictures of it painted!

BTW so if I understood right you'll put torso permanently into the legs? Not any very strong magnets or something to allow transporting in 2 parts(what I'm planning to try on the much smaller warhound)? Permanent attachment? Presumably to ensure torso doesn't fall off or something? And this will be done pre-painting? Just wondering how much of this one would go painting in separate parts. Not sure how I would go around painting 22" tall model in one piece! Probably would need to create some sort of painting box just for this model as usual way of airbrushing by holding part by hand on somewhere I'm not planning probably wouldn't work on this big and heavy model!

Basically in other Forge World models, but yeah he's paying me.

tneva82 wrote:Hopefully we'll eventually see pictures of it painted!

BTW so if I understood right you'll put torso permanently into the legs? Probably would need to create some sort of painting box just for this model as usual way of airbrushing by holding part by hand on somewhere I'm not planning probably wouldn't work on this big and heavy model!

Painting will be starting really soon!

And yeah the torso will be permanently attached. If it were my model I'd try very hard to have it pretty poseable, but it's not my model and my friend is more of a gamer than I am, so he doesn't want a massive action figure on the table, he wants a model that will stay in one piece. So the torso is getting bolted to the hips from inside (the torso is pretty hollow). Once the main parts of the body skeleton are assembled it and the weapons will just get spray painted outside and the smaller parts (if you can call an armor plate larger than many tanks "small") will be airbrushed inside.

After building the legs, the next big step was making the base. This took a bit of back and forth with the model's owner to get the right size and make it big enough for adding some detail to - but not too much. No stomped Rhinos or Sicarans here! The first thing was to figure out how to make an oval of the right size, cut it out and get the legs mounted.

With the legs mounted, the rest of the body could be built and attached (3 thick wood screws into the hips). Lots of thick, gel type CA glue and more wood screws to hold the shoulders in place. Plus I had to figure out how to attach the weapons, which are shown in the next video.

While things were drying, the weapons got assembled - not a huge amount to show, but some significant gaps had to be filled in with putty.

This is the most recent video, the next ones will show it at least partially painted!

About halfway through part 7 I go into how the weapons will attach to the arms, and there's a bit more about that in part 8.

As for transport, it's up to you - I've been talking with a guy building his Warlord and he's magnetized all the armor plates for easier transport. I don't see how that will make it easier, but to each their own! With the weapons removed from the torso, yes it will be easier to transport with the torso and legs/base in 2 parts, but my friend is also concerned about making absolutely sure a 10-kilo block of expensive painted resin doesn't drop onto his models while he's trying to move the model on a gaming table

As for the time it took to assemble...not counting washing and clean-up of mold lines and casting gates, the legs took about an evening, the torso took a bit longer because of the screwing and drilling I felt was needed.
