Question on Mechanicus Standard Grey Spray Paint

Hi everyone, hobby noobie here with a quick question regarding the spray paint from Citadel (Mechanicus Standard Grey).

Now I’ve been using the Chaos Black spray for most of my models.

If I change to a Grey undercoat spray does that affect the color outcome of my models?
I’m thinking of painting the default color scheme of Militarum tempestus scions for a friend and was wondering if using grey undercoat will make the model brighter compared to using black spray.

Thank you!

Question on Mechanicus Standard Grey Spray Paint

yes generally. Your basecoat can bleed through slightly and effect the end result. Its why people swear by black/white/grey base coats. Its effects their final result and their personal style.

Question on Mechanicus Standard Grey Spray Paint

I agree with Lance completely - the tone of your miniature can change quite a lot. Not as much of course if you swapped from black to white of course but grey is still considerably lighter than black.

This can mean that some colours will look more vibrant as they can be painted over grey more easily. The tone of the miniature is definitenly likely to be lighter overall as well.

However, it also depends on your painting. If you apply several layers each time, the change will be more subtle.

Question on Mechanicus Standard Grey Spray Paint

It depends on the colours you're painting. Some colours are more transparent than others, those will be affected a lot, some colours are quite opaque and it'll make little to no difference what colour undercoat you use.

It also depends what method you use to paint, if you like starting off with shades and working your way up to lighter colours a dark undercoat works well, if you like starting with light colours and working your way down to the shades then a dark undercoat will make your life unnecessarily painful.
