Do you mean this stuff?

You can find it pretty much anywhere. All arts and craft stores have it, and most big box stores.
I think its just called plastic mesh, but it's also known as "granny grates".

Plastic Canvas is what it's also known as.
Find it in the needlework aisles of haberdashery stores. It's for the wool based needlework (the cottons use a much tighter weave.)

Just a heads up...knitting mesh or whatever you want to call it is tough to adhere to things. It's an ideal material for texturing, but you have to find a clever way of genuinely pinning it down (if you can hide heavy globs of hot glue or something that can work). Generally normal glue, and even super glue does a poor job of making it stick to stuff.

If someone has a trick to gluing it (outside of hot glue, epoxy, etc.) please do speak up! It's good cheap material but I've struggled to use it as planned.

The downside to it is that until the grating itself is painted it will be sticky to touch.
