What material do you use for making imprints of items, like the face of a shield?

I typically use green stuff. I order it by the ton on Ebay.

But then I wondered, what else do people use for creating the mold for imprinting? Is there a preferable, cheap, plentiful material out there? Or is Green Stuff where it's at?

A more specific question then.... What would you use to cover a large area, then imprint dozens and dozens of items? Like a large sheet of a material. I've done it a few times with green stuff. I'll use a thin layer of mineral oil as release compound.
