Alternative might be grey which isn't too dark and gives nice base for white anyway. But when you mix white with red it's pink....

Pink.

It takes a lot of coats to kill the pinking in red paint when you paint it over white. Start with the grey or black.

Grey seems best to me.
A good grey will kind of self shade the white areas while not being such a hindrance to the reds. Corax white spray

Touch up anything missed with white with a ting of grey to try and match it

zenith highlight with normal white spray or airbrush

black out garments and areas that will be colored

for red id go off the black to hull red which is a fantastic brown red from valliejo then up to whatever red fancies you.
