How to remove Dettol from models

Hey guys, my friend dunked his Space Wolves into Dettol and, while it worked a certain amount, it’s been a tough job getting rid of the undercoat. He’s at a point where he’s happy with the amount taken off, but there’s still some undercoat left on them and the smell of Dettol is real haha. He’s let them dry, but he’s worried that when he sprays them or tries to paint them again, the Dettol will reject the paint. Is there a way to wash it off? I’ve heard rinsing it with water can create a slimy mess that’s really hard to clean up, so any suggestions from Dettol vets would be awesome.

Thanks in advance

How to remove Dettol from models

Once I've left a model to soak in dettol for a day or two, I take a toothbrush and scrub the model under a hot water tap. Once this has removed most of the paint, I dry the model and then take a craft knife to peal away the last bits of paints and to cut away any sludge that has congealed on the model.

It takes a while but by the end my models have always been ready to be resprayed.

How to remove Dettol from models

Thanks for the replies, he ended up just scrubbing off as much Dettol as he could and rinsed them under a tap, which wasn’t as world ending as we thought it would be. Probably because there wasn’t much Dettol left on them

How to remove Dettol from models

You can use isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) or methylated spirits to get dettol residue off (dettol is mostly isopropyl alcohol anyway (small percentage of anti-bac compound, eucalyptus oil and colour).

The important thing with dettol is NOT to rinse with water while the paint is STILL soft from the dettol (let it dry and the dettol on them to evaporate) or you will just turn the paint into sticky glue. Use either of the above solvents I mentioned FIRST, then rinse that off with water.

If you use plenty of fairy liquid when rubbing of the soft dettolised paint it doesn't go a sticky mess in my experience.
