Shadows Using Washes/Glazes

I'm looking for alternative ways to create shadows on my models in addition to edge highlighting and using washes in the recesses of a model, and was wondering if anyone has tried creating shadows over large areas using washes or glazes. For instance, using a couple layers of washes between the legs of a mini to create the appearance of a shadow after recess shading and edge highlights. Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks!
