Too many imperials

This is my first ever post on DakkaDakka, so I'm very much open for critique when it comes to layout, length and such, but please PM me about these things rather than post in the thread, I'd much rather it stays on subject. The camera quality is pretty bad as well, but I'll be taking some new photos with my SO's big camera when I get the time, and either replacing or posting more once I have

Hello! Figured I'd share my progress on my scions, who knows, it might motivate me to finish them faster (Been working on the off and on for two-three years now). The company doesn't have a name yet, as I haven't wanted to just name them off the top of my head, so for now they're just scions from a small planet near the Ghoul Stars. Pictures!

Spoiler:

it's a tiny picture for some reason, but that's the state of the scions I've painted so far around 2 months ago, when I started getting back into it properly.
Now, I was struggling to paint my scions because I couldn't figure out quite what I wanted to do with them, I really liked my choice of colours and felt happy with the posing and such, but they just didn't have any character, so I put off assembling any more and spent almost a year dabbing paint on and removing it again, never really getting anywhere. Then I sort of gave up.

One and a half year after finishing the basic paint job, I suddenly got a burst of motivation and inspiration: 8th was coming out, and according to what I'd heard it was going to be a pretty big change to how 40k plays. So I sat back down with my poor scions and gave it all a long hard think, and got nothing... Until I checked the sprues. Now, every scion sprue contains a single greatcoat, for putting on your army commader, but since I bought a big ol' army box, I had at least five of these, and that seriously inspired me to do some converting, so I dug out my bitz box and my greenstuff and this was the result

Lord Commander Lorkar (I've sorted his hand out since the picture was taken)

Spoiler:

This seriously added character to the army and set a lot of questions rattling around in my mind: Why does the whole command-squad wear greatcoats? Why are there so many AdMech parts involved? Where did the Lord Commander get that sword? And with that I felt invested in the army again, and set about freshening up the paintjob and finishing off the Taurox Prime that had been sat on my desk for far longer than I'd like to admit:

Spoiler:

Now, at this point in my life, I had just recovered from a complete burnout, which took two years to fully heal, and suddenly found myself with plenty of time, some disposable income and a lot of things I wanted to try out, paint-wise. So I did the only reasonable thing and dug out some poor renegades and cultists to try new techniques out on (But that's a post for another day) and learnt to paint things that I'd never thought I'd be able to, like fancy power swords for example:

Spoiler:

I followed this up by training my free-handing skills, something I had always dreaded during my previous 19 years of painting miniatures.. And it turned out ok. So I started thinking about how I could apply this new found skill to my Scions, and at that precis moment it all came together:
They're not trained by the Schola Progenum or anything like that, and they also do not train under the IG, PDF or SM of the planet (Which I've named Vhun), rather: They are trained by the only part of Vhun society that could afford to train a regiment of elite human soldiers during Vhun's Ion-storm related isolation from the Empire: The Knight Houses, Questor Imperialis!
So...

Spoiler:

Spoiler:

And more to come!

So TL,DR; I didn't know what to do to give my scions character, so I made them Squires for the Questor Imperialis on an isolated imperial world.

Sorry for the grainy pictures and mismatched resolutions, long post and all that, I'll get better in the future.
Tell me what you think or if you have any ideas for where I could go next! The plan for now is to buy some War of the Roses mounted men at arms from Perry Miniatures and convert into knightly rough riders to join my Scions in battle.

Cheers for reading/looking

Some more freehand work added. A lot of it still needs a lot of touching up, but I feel like the style is becoming clearer, and that is helping with deciding how to design the rest of the scions (Which I've been hesitant to start painting before I had the uniform down)

Not sure I like the middle right scion's shoulder-pattern, the sort of 'tartan' is hard to get even, so might just change it for something else.

More to come, so watch this space!
