Chaos Marines.... I suppose that'll do as a title.

Hey ho,

So after a very long absence I have recently started getting back into 40k. Here I am going to try and document my (probably very slow!!!!) progress on modelling a Chaos Marine army.

While there's been some pretty tasty chaos and death guard miniatures that GW have put out lately, they're all a little too CHAOS for my tastes. Too spikey, too filthy, too ANGRY lookin' if you ask me. Not to mention the heap of mono-pose minis there seem to be for Chaos. What I've always liked about Chaos is that you can kitbash them from basically anything and everything even remotely related to a space marine. So I plan to do just that The aim to make a chaos army that's less about gluing on spikes, and more about trying to use unique features to make them stand out from loyalist marines. That's the idea anyway.

At the moment I've only got myself a handful of bits and some greenstuff, and I'm just playing around with ideas really.

When looking through GW's site at all the minis I've missed since the last time I saw a miniature about 8 or so years ago, I was instantly drawn to the Custodes. They've got some really nice minis. And not to mention: Guns on spears!!!!!! My immediate reaction was to ask out loud, to God, what other weapons could be improved by gluing guns to them? The obvious answer, when it comes to Chaos, is scythes ...right?

Spoiler:

I bought a couple of Cutodes spears, cut 'em up and removed the frankly GRATUITOUS amount of imperial-tainted decoration. I cut down the boltgun part into something more pistol sized, the idea being that, on the tabletop, they can represent a power weapon and a bolt pistol. Not too much of a stretch I don't think! There's still a little more work to do with cleaning up, adding a little more GS etc. but overall I'm happy with the way they're turning out.

Also looking at Custodes, I really liked the jetbike dudes. I love their robed thigh and upper-arm pieces with the leather boots/ gloves. I think it's pretty neat and a nice departure from your typical marine. I wanted to poach this idea and maybe beef up the torso armour a little to compensate for the lack of armour on the limbs.

Spoiler:

For the legs I just cut down some space marine legs and GS'd the upper parts. I think the lower section of legs fits pretty well with this. Deathwatch torso for the extra neck armour, which I beefed up the waistline on a little and added a Custodes elbow armour to. Again, still work to be done, but I think I'm in the right ballpark for what I was envisioning.

I took a non-deathwatch torso here and added a little extra armour to the top, set forward a little so a normal sized head could fit in. Rest of the torso is the same as above. The head itself is a devastator head I added a little too many optical things to. I think it looks kinda creepy and spidery.

With my general distaste for spikey things in Chaos, I wanted to come up with something for the heads of my dudes that could help them stand out. I though about an executioner type hood thing? They look pretty creepy and MEAN, definitely fitting for Chaos.

Spoiler:

I'm not 100% sold on how these turned out. I think they may grow on me a little once I get some paint on them and they don't have the weird different coloured eye bits.

Lastly I did quick pose mock-up with some various odd bits:

Spoiler:

You can't much see the arms, but I added a robed bit to the top part and suck some of the Custodes gloves/ gauntlets on. The legs are posed but not yet got their actual sculpting on. The pose is a little static looking IMO, but eh it's not the worst.

Any comments/ feedback/ abuse/ is welcomed! I am pretty on the fence with how I feel about a lot of this ha, so opinions of any kind would be of great help.

Thanks for reading!

Chaos Marines.... I suppose that'll do as a title.

Welcome back to chaos shmvo !

Very cool (re)start, the pose on the scythe warrior is just brillant, and more of the hooded marines will make for a menacing force. Any idea on which color you will paint these hoods ?

Keep it up !

Re:Chaos Marines.... I suppose that'll do as a title.

Thank you! I think I'm going to go with a Scythes of the Emporer-ish scheme? Mostly black and red with a little yellow on the chest part of the marines. Looking to ebay some cheap test models in the near future...

A tiny update! Progress is slow I'm going to start with a squad of Havocs. Basically just because I like them, and I think there's some potential for some visual distinction other than them just having BIG GUNS. I'm thinking 2 Lascannons and 2 Heavy Bolters and some kind of combi-gun for the champ.

A not very exciting Heavy Bolter tweak:

Spoiler:

I was never much of a fan of the way the CSM guys held the thing, it always looked like you couldn't support any weight that way... and the SM ones have the goofy ammo feed thing so I decided to FORGE MY OWN PATH. Needs a lil GS to patch some holes still.

I also worked on some more heads:

Spoiler:

I'm enjoying going overboard with the eyes and cables lol. I used a head and bunch of cut up heads from the Cataphron Destroyers, a little drilling and GS for the cables. I think I like the way most of them turned out.

Also started on the champion for the squad:

Spoiler:

I really love the Culexus assassin model, and I really wanted to use the headpiece from one but damn, I'm not made of money So I had a bit of a crack at creating something with a similar feel. I think the head still needs a little more detail? A couple of smaller lens maybe and a few studs and bits. The shoulder cloak is WIP, but I like the general shape a lot.

Again, feedback and/or venomous beratement is welcome!!
