Vortex Beast assembly HELP!

I'm trying to assemble this thing, and step 9 has me absolutely dumbfounded. Im trying to put parts 18 and 17 together, but they seem to not fit at all, and I can't seem to figure it out. It isn't a seam, and it isnt excess plastic, there is something wrong here or im doing it wrong. Sorry for the lack of pictures, but i'll be honest without actually assembling one yourself, you probably won't understand either how this would even function. It's two parts that form into a spine of spikes, but the two parts just will NOT go together.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
*update* The kit itself is a confusing mess, and a lot of parts only "vaguely" fit together. And there is basically no tutorials online.

I put one together awhile back, and I don’t remember any problems with bad fitting parts. It’s definitely like a jigsaw puzzle though, so make sure the parts are going in at the right angle. Also, there might be some sprue bits poking out keeping it from fitting correctly.

It's been a good while since I assembled mine, so I may not have the most helpful advice to offer. That said, I distinctly remember having one part that wouldn't fit at first because finding the right orientation wasn't easy. Left torso side,I think? Does that sound familiar?

Basically, as said, you should think of it as a jigsaw and entirely rely on fitting the edges together without any notion of how it should look or how it should be oriented visually. It'll line up only one way and if you're methodical you'll evenetual find the right fit. I remember even after figuring it out with dry fitting, I had to figure it out again from the start after putting glue on it because it was so counter-intuitive.
