What colour should my terrain be against my modular board?

Hello all,

I've currently got a 4ft x 4ft gaming board that is a dark brown main colour, with black and tan lowlights/highlights. There is also some yellow, dead grass places sporadically as well to show a wasteland or a chemical attack aftermath.

I'm planning to add ruins, but I'm a bit stuck on what colour to paint them. I was thinking of black with a heavy grey drybrush, but I feel that dark ruins on a dark board might look a bit naff.
My second idea was a light gray with a heavy grey drybrush with a good coating of serephim sepia to give a dirty look, but light enough to stand out.

But, what do you guys think? And any ideas you can think of?

I recommend looking at some batrep videos or online galleries of scenery for inspiration. Sometimes it's surprising what people have done that looks good. My advice would be (a) pick a scheme you won't get fed up with painting or playing on and (b) try to come up with a theme or concept that you can invest yourself in. For example, I just painted some houses to look like rural Swedish houses. Now that I have established a theme, I can create the rest of my scenery around that, by making pine forests, wolves, archipelagos etc. For ruins, you could try looking at images of old cities (Rome, Istanbul, Marakesh etc.) or images of current warzones, to see what buildings look like when ruined by warfare.

A picture or two might help.

But going off of the description, I think ochre would be a safe choice. It's both a lighter color and helps buildings stand out sufficiently, and you can use darker brown in recesses and around the base to tie them to the board. plus as a fairly neutral color, you can add a number of spot colors if you wish without worrying that they clash.

I occasionally play on a black/dark grey board with black/dark grey buildings at my local store. It doesn't look terrible or anything, but it can blur into each other. Personally I'd avoid this.

If you want color clash, you could go for white. Since you mean to build ruins there's plenty of room for weathering, battle damage and generally darkening them down a bit so they don't stand out quite as much as they could, but you'll definitely get large areas that will stand out.
