I recently bought the army painter hobby starter set and it's great value for what you get. However I have found the brushes at the tip form a hook like end which is obviously terrible for precise edge highlighting. The white "Wargamer ones seem better but on the whole I've been disappointed with the brown starter style brushes.

All synthetic bristle brushes eventually form that hook, or they fray. You have two choices, continually buy synthetic brushes to use until they form the hook, or buy a natural bristle brush ( red sable, or kolinsky sable) and use that. And learn to care for it.

I found this on the army painter brushes I have bought as well. And the hook formed pretty quickly from new.

Invest in a set of sables, even some of the cheap ones on amazon are good for a bit of use.

They turn up tomorrow so hopefully they do the job, its so annoying I start a highlight nicely then I forms the hook and ruins everything.

you can cut the odd Bristol off with a clipper, I wash my brushes in Brush Cleaner soap after every couple sessions, I soak my brushes in Turpenoid Natural, a brush cleaners for oil brushes for 30 min, then clean out with a old T-shirt, before rinsing out with brush cleaner soap.

I use an armypainter-hobby brush with synthetic bristols to great success as edge-highlighting machine. It's pretty thin and the bristols are like cement, the little hook is so tiny, that it's actually a blessing for getting some paint soaked in the tip.....

(which is a HUGE problem for my windsor and newton....the tips are so fine, they just don't hold ANY paint, and that's so terribly annoying to post-brush all the edges again).

If you really want to have great value for your $$, I highly recommend the DaVinci Sable Brush Set. I started out with it and it's pretty much a better GW aquivalent for the same price.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Vinci-5246-Multipurpose-Sable-Brush/dp/B000PHBGEW/ref=sr_1_12?ie=UTF8&qid=1527321356&sr=8-12&keywords=davinci+brush+set

(It's actually a chunk more expensive in the UK than it is in Germany)

Do you clean your brushes with brush soap? Make every effort to get them back to a fine point while they dry?

Since you're in the UK, rather than get the 'better' Army Painter brushes you should look at getting Rosemary & Co. series 33. They're only a little bit more expensive and yet they're comfortably superior (if you take good care of them). Comprable to WN 7 series quality.
