Really noob questions about what is considered a legal or "cool - rule" conversion

Ok, im going to ask some questions of what i think is legal/coolrule(wat ever its called) based on what i have researched so far, and i want to know if im wrong and what is correct. ( i only want to know what is allowed strictly with the majority of warhammer players/professional tournaments etc )

Are you allowed to for e.g, replace a figure in a 40k army with a model from lets say age of sigmar or some old non-40k warhammer figure as long as they are very close in appearence/size AND genuine games workshop models etc.

Are you allowed to put any space marine in to for e.g a dark angels army, or is this only allowed for non uniquely excuslive to there legion models ( for e.g just normal looking space marine troops, and bikes ). When i say Uniquely exclusive i mean things like lets say dark angel veteran squad ( since they have like those robes they wear and space marines do not ).

heres a link to a video i watched that has confused me alot. This guy did not really answer my questions so watch this video please to get a understanding of what im trying to ask. Thank you for all your help. im slightly slowed so please just answer as simply as you can haha.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MRQTh-8xINA&t=66s

I need to know this because its confusing the heck out of me. Like if your allowed to use non games workshop models then why spend money on the real things. I want to collect/play and want to know im not wasting my money

Non-GW models only fly in a casual setting.

GW models can be mixed and matched within an army - just be consistent with weaponry, gear loadouts, paintjobs, and rules.

For example, if you have blue marines; you can say they're any faction you want (most people play custom chapters, or paint as one chapter, but use the rules for another). What you CAN'T do [shouldn't] is use blue marines as one faction (say Dark Angels) while ALSO using blue marines as another faction (say Imperial Fists). in the same army.

Switching them between games is acceptable; people like to test rules, new models/loadouts, etc.

Really noob questions about what is considered a legal or "cool - rule" conversion

You can do "counts as" models. It doesn't have to be "very close" in appearance; you only have to let your opponent know what datasheet the model represents. People used to do "counts as" lists all the time with previous editions - in 3rd/4th edition the Lost and the Damned list was the swiss army knife of "counts as" armies; using its rules people have run Squats (or Dwarves converted to be Squats), a Rogue Trader army (I think this got a mention in White Dwarf), goblins having stolen some Imperial vehicles (as you could use certain Imperial Guard figures), and Adeptus Mechanicus army long before they had any AM codexes out there (this one was written up in White Dwarf - they used the Defiler rules for an experimental tracked AM tank with a new weapon) or any other non-standard army that you needed a list for.

As to what you use, it depends on whether you're talking about your local group or a tournament. In all cases you'd want to check with them. Traditionally for tournaments you'd be using Citadel/Games Workshop models*, though often you could get by with modifications from some third party bitz (heads, weapons and the like).

On the SM front, you can certainly use any old space marine figure for Dark Angels. You could have normal Space marines painted orange for that matter and still use the Dark Angels rules. All that matters is that your opponents can tell what unit is supposed to be what. A lot of people would be okay if you converted Skaven or Goblins over to be Astra Militarum if you gave them some of the proper equipment.

Most tournaments won't allow you to just use non-GW models, though there's some good ones out there. That doesn't mean you can't use them with your friends or that a tournament won't let you use some converted figures (always better with some GW parts somewhere - the old rule of thumb used to be at least 50% GW parts).

*the company put out many Citadel models before they branded as Warhammer or Warhammer 40k. They even did some Doctor Who Dalek and Cybermen models. Technically those would be legal, but they were at 25 mm scale so all the Cybermen are really too small to use to cobble together a Cybermen army using Necron rules and have it look right in comparision to your opponent's army. It's a shame, really. Just for fun though, if you run a CSM army and get hold of some of the Dalek figures, try substituting some of them in for Obliterators just for fun.

Really noob questions about what is considered a legal or "cool - rule" conversion

Whether a model is acceptable/unacceptable has less to do with whether it's GW or not and more about whether it looks like what you're trying to use it as. I could take a Warmachine Cryx model that's entirely not a GW model but is a robed mechanical/metal skeleton covered in elaborate cables and exhausts, swap in reasonable approximations of the correct weapons, and call it a Techpriest Dominus, and as long as it's about the right size and I don't try and do that in a GW store or large-format tournament (local store-level events you're probably fine, but may want to ask the TO first) I'm probably fine. If I try and take a GW Skink and try to tell you it's a winged Daemon Prince it's not even remotely okay even in a GW store.

The primary consideration when looking at a conversion is not "is it a GW model" or "are you using it as the thing GW has it listed on the box as", it is "does it look like enough like the thing you want it to represent that you aren't going to cause confusion". You spend the money on the GW models because the constraints of copyright mean that other peoples' models are infinitely more likely to cause confusion (with the notable exception of the Guard, since there are a lot of Guard regiments in the galaxy and it's difficult to copyright "sci-fi riflemen" or "giant boxy retro tank"), and because GW tends to make pretty cool models anyway.

In the case of the example you've given of robed Dark Angels I would point out that your models are going to be wearing power armour and (presumably) carrying the correct weapons, at which point nobody is going to get confused if you try and tell them "this is (this power-armoured unit) with (these weapons)" since it looks like the thing you're using it as. If you try and tell them they're Primaris Marines, Terminators, Scouts, or something else that they don't look like, that's a problem, but hopping Chapters isn't.

The legion/chapter specific kits can be used by other chapters/legions without a problem as long as you make it clear before hand which army you are playing.

In official GW events and playing in a GW store you cannot use models that are not from GW, outside of that you can use whatever you like, providing your opponent knows what it is and it is not confusing. As you seem to struggle with this a bit mate can I suggest you go and have a chat with the manager of the Lower Hutt GW, he is a good bloke and he will tell you exactly what is and isnt allowed in a GW or GW sanctioned event.
ok so i just have to make sure that i dont give a model a weapon that he does not use? so like for e.g i cant give a weapon that only a certain model uses and just give it to another type of model within the same race, like i cant just give a normal spacemarine trooper a powerful weapon that a is used by like a spacmarine captain or dark angels captain.

And yes i will attend the upper hutt and lower hutt battles so i can ask questions etc

These are what i have bought, i got rid of the chaos marines i showed u, im gonna stick with dark angels.

Good stuff mate,
For the weapons you can see under the unit entries in the codex what are legal or not, but that is the gist of it (example being a tactical squad is upto 10 marines, of these 1 is a sergeant, 1 has a special weapon, one a heavy and the other seven bolt guns).

Yep, old codexes are a good place for fluff. I am not that current on DA but have not heard of any massive changes to their lore in recent editions. So the broad outline of it is the going to be pretty close. This is also worth a look;
http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Dark_Angels

No, to Eldar in your DA as you say. Any other Imperium can be mixed in the army but dont worry about that for the minute as its just another level of complexity you dont need at the moment.

Good to hear you have settled on an army and made a nice start to it.
