Using Citadel Base as a Layer?

I am currently trying to paint some of my CSMs Rotting Flesh from the Citadel app. I already put Druchii Violet over Rakarth Flesh and can get Carroburg Crimson but after that, It wants me to go back to Rakarth.

Has anyone actually used base paint as a layer?

If yes, how can it be done?

Is it a better idea to use Dry Wrack White instead?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Base paints are just more opaque, which means more pigment. Just water it down a little to reduce the opacity. I think the idea of the rotting flesh scheme is to show the dead areas of skin where bacteria is getting munchy.

Using Citadel Base as a Layer?

Dont put water into the pot! If the paint is way too thick use some lahmium medium sparingly. And by too thick, i mean it is drying out and stupidly gloopy. Lahmium medium is the acrylic medium in which the pigments are suspended. Less medium= base paint, most medium= glaze, on a rough scale.

Paint thinning is subjective, but most people aim for the consistency of milk. Dont add too much otherwise you can flood the model with paint when you apply it.

If i were you i wouldnt waste money on a new pot. A couple of brush loads of the base paint on a wet pallete with a litle bit of water will go a long long way as a layer paint, and will stay moist and useable for a long time if kept covered.

If you are unsure about paint thinning, youtube is your friend. Watch Duncans Warhammer world tutorials as well as he covers so many of the techniques you will want to use.

Re:Using Citadel Base as a Layer?

GW's naming conventions for paint (Edge, technical, Base, Layer, etc. etc.) is all marketing. There is nothing special about a Base vs Layer paint that you can't achieve with some other paint line. You could use GW's Edge paint as a base layer if you wanted to. You could highlight something with a GW Base color. GW just likes to make a novice painter feel less intimidated or frustrated by providing a recipe for painting, and there is nothing wrong with that.

GW's 12 Step Paint Recipe
1. Assemble model
2. Undercoat model with GW Spray Color of your choice
3. Base coat the model using a color from the Base color range
4. Add more color using layers from the Layer range
5. Dry brush the model using Dry Brush paints
6. Use a Glaze to recover some color from the dry brush
7. Shade the model using GW shades
8. High light the model using GW Edge paints
9. Use Technical paints for "special effects" like gems or lenses
10. Use GW Texture for bases
11. Add GW decals
12. Seal with GW 'Ardcoat (do they even make that stuff anymore? They have a paint version, but do they still make the spray version?)

If you never painted anything in your life, you could follow that 12 step process for anything and it would work. Of course, there is a lot more to it, and there is practice, plus using the right paint brush, etc. etc. However, this is a brilliant marketing move to get inexperienced players into painting, and it works! Eventually, you realize it's just a recipe, and like all recipes, it can be changed. That's when the real fun begins!

There is a difference in pigment levels, so the paints aren't going to behave exactly the same way. Using a layer paint as the base coat may require more coats to get good coverage, and using a base paint for shading/highlighting may require you to dilute it more to keep it from overpowering the other colors. You can use them for different purposes, but you should understand that it may not be ideal and may require some different techniques.

Automatically Appended Next Post:

parakuribo wrote:
Is it a better idea to use Dry Wrack White instead?

No. GW's dry paints are trash and a waste of money.
