Citadel Paint App is great for this kind of thing.

Any "moonscape" bases you see for GW tend to be done with their 'Urban Debris' color scheme.
-Astrogranite Debris(this is a texture! it's thick and goopy. highly suggest their tool or something similar if you want to be able to shape/play with it. don't use an actual brush)
-Shade with Agrax Earthshade
-Drybrush Tyrant Skull
