Drybrush, then Wash, or vice versa?

In general, which way do more of us go? In particular, I'm about to do 4'x8' worth of table surface and I'm leaning toward the way I've phrased it... drybrush, then wash.

I generally go for a drybrush, then wash, as it helps make the drybrush not appear as chalky. Even on the cork/rock bases I sometimes use.
Though I've never tried it on such a large scale such as terrain or a gaming board.

Good luck!

Drybrush, then Wash, or vice versa?

I find it depends on what I'm shooting for. Drybrush then wash can hide some of the "dustyness" and tie colors in together.
Wash then drybrush gives deeper darks and brighter lights but can be the aforementioned dusty if overdone.

Drybrush, then Wash, or vice versa?

I'd go wash first, then drybrush, then use a glaze afterwards if need be to remove any dusty effect. Alternatively, one suggestion I've seen from Chris Peach on the Warhammer TV videos is to very carefully add a small amount of water to thin the paint you're using to drybrush (or use a layer paint rather than a dry paint), which makes it do more smoothly. It takes a bit of practise to get it right, I suppose.

If I were to drybrush firt, I'd make the drybrushing heavier, and use a lighter colour than I would otherwise, so the effect still shows up through the wash. Also, drybrushing can help to disguise any imperfections in the wash, where it's perhaps a little uneven.

For a full table, get a cheap 2" or 3" brush from a DIY store and use that.

Thanks, everyone. Good reasoning on both sequences... I've started with the drybrushing, so we'll see how that goes. Progress pics are up in my P&M thread if anyone's interested!
