I am brand brand new to painting (and this website, so hello, I hope I am doing this right) and thought I'd practice by painting one of each of the original Traitor Legions, trying to make them as lore-y with I could mix and match from the CSM starting box. Here's my first attempt - a Word Bearer (waving around an icon, obviously) using;

PRIMER: Chaos Black
BASECOAT: Khorne Red
WASH: Carroberg Crimson
TRIM: Ironbreaker
LAYER: Evil Sunz Scarlet (avoiding the recesses)
RECESSING: Agrax Earthshade
HIGHLIGHT: Evil Sunz Scarlet/Runefang Steel

Any advice or comments appreciated, I'm only starting so trying to figure out as I go!

I would suggest that you look into stripping your minis of paint, with products like simple green. When you end up not getting the results you wanted.

The model has champion parts and an Icon of Vengeance. The paint scheme looks like You went for a Traitor Legion Word Bearers Chaos Space Marine.

The model is crisp and and highlighted well. I like what You did with the Icon. What do You have planned for the basing?

Looking forward to seeing a complete squad done in this manner.

1) I do not leave things drying long enough. Seriously. I want about five minutes and then I want to dive in again. Need to work on this.

2) Following Duncan's steps does not make your models end up like Duncan's.

3) Don't mix up two colour schemes from two different sources. I meant to basecoat my Alpha Legion in Ahriman Blue as per The Wargamer's great 30k video, not Warhammer TV's video. Ended up having to paint over the main panels with Ahriman, which actually didn't turn out too bad! I was just a little sick of metallic trim.

4) choosing which bits to go with each model is so much freaking fun, I could spend hours doing it. Am on a strictly paint-before-purchasing-new-models diet, but part of me just wants a huge chest of bitz to play with.

IRON WARRIOR

Primer - Army Painter Metallic Silver
Wash - Agrax Earthshade
Trim - Hashut Copper
Wash - thinned down Agrax

I was afraid to try painting freehand chevrons, so I repurposed a Helbrute power scourge to serve as some already-segmented mechandentrites.

ALPHA LEGION

I wanted to go for a kind of stealthy-Legion novel-esque Alpha Legion. (There have been a lot of good expansion/retcons in the HH, but I think the Alpha Legion have gotten the best of the deal. They may be my kill-team, I'm not sure yet) so I nabbed a Death Guard head from a friend and made it a bit night-visiony.

Primer - Chaos Black
Basecoat - Macragge Blue
Panels - Ahriman Blue
Wash - Coelia Greenshade

Plasma Weapon

Abaddon Black
Ceramite White - Hexwraith Flame - White Scar highlights

I'm debating putting another wash of Waywatcher just on the bottom panels of the armour, but I'm not sure... I also pretty much still have no idea exactly where to highlight, so I end up over-highlighting, but will practice further!

However it's looking good. Alot of people pick single chaos chapter such as thousands sons. You could check out the black legion they utilizes a combination of units.

Chaos undivided I think.

I myself have a world eaters army.

Anyways good start.

I noticed some edges on the trim that could be cleaned up. For this task I personally use a very sharp modeling knife to shave off unwanted paint. If you're careful it's very effective way to remove paint layers without damaging the paint below, deal with clumping, grit or that sandpaper like texture that paint can get like.

So remember water down your paint so that your painting around the consistency of milk.

Good luck. Keep at it. Don't forget to critique yourself and compare your work to things you admire.

If you screw up. Easy off oven cleaner strips paint. You need a mask for it.

Or products like simple green.

I'm not sure for resins.

So I've been crazy into the books and fluff for ages but have never actually collected, and I'm not sure what army I'm going to go for, but I bought the Chaos Starter Pack and I thought it'd be fun to try and paint one of each Marine to teach myself how to work with a range of colours and effects. This project is just for display I think! I am leaning towards Chaos Undivided or Black Legion, just so I can try out painting lots of different schemes, but I'm still working up the courage to go to the local GW tournament night and watch some games played! How are World Eaters to play? Pics?

Thank you for the feedback and advice - I must pick up a modelling knife, I've been a little careless with leaving sprue nubbins (not sure what you call them) on the models and need to sort that, and I've already used some brown dettol to remove a dodgy EC Marine colour scheme and it worked really well!
