Re:Do you guys generally base SM dreadnaughts?

My first metal Dreadnoughts came without bases and they very much relied on the design standing up without help. Yet years of playing taught me that as cool as that might be, it's impractical. Someone grazes the model, it falls over. Someone bumps into the table, it falls over. Uneven ground is a hassle. The slightest incline and you're going to have to place the model on its belly or its back.

The rules shouldn't bother you too much. As seen above some people mind, but there are models in the game that don't use bases (vehicles, which a Dreadnought happens to be) and the rules have you covered if you decide to go without a base.

I for one was happy when GW introduced 60mm round bases and immediately put my baseless Dreadnoughts on them. It's a better experience in my opinion.

I never thought about NOT basing them. Yeah the old metal ones didn't come with a base but it's entirely up to you how you want to build you models and enjoy the hobby/game.

60mm bases are large enough to have some good storytelling elements in there. Barbed wire, bullet casings, dead foes etc.

Re:Do you guys generally base SM dreadnaughts?

Ye, I base all my models (vehicles etc included). It makes them all look uniform with the rest of the army and is way easier to move across mats (like mouse mat material ones if sliding) cause there is no jagged bits etc.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Inregards to cheapness. It depends on your basing theme. For 40k, All my armies are larva. I have always bought GW bases (if need to) and with all my 40k armies I then bought cork board (like 1m x1m, is a mega tonne of bases worth) and pva glued it on in fragments. Then Chaos black, brush most eschen grey, dry brush dawn stone, Null oil the edges. In the recesses/gaps wet blend Evil sun to troll slayer to yriel to yriel with white scar all = instant awesome larva bases (is super quick in lots). An easier one is glue small gravel on base (eschen grey than dry brush dawn stone and add in some static grass).

My extra edit/bonus tip

I see a lot of people, when I rarely do pick ups, with either the models painted and the base not done or they have off spray on their bases etc. Models on mass look good if all the bases look uniform, not the opposite. If you have 10 awesome painted models out of 40 and all the bases are crap, the entire army looks crap. However, if you have all the bases looking good and only have basic painting on the models (no hightlights etc) they still looks ok.

I would suggest doing the bases first for an entire army and doing the models second.
