Working with shields

So I have recently gotten into WFB, and are kinda new to dealing with shields, namely, painting under them. With Space Marines, I got used to not painting on arms and/or bolters until I was done with the eagle on the chests, but gluing shoulders and arm pads on marines is easy. Bolters might get a little messy.

But I really don't know what to do about shields. The problem is that shields do cover up a lot of the model, and typically only attach to a forearm, which isn't much. I do prefer to have the model fully assembed as much as I can before I paint, but I worry its going to be a struggle with details under the shields or around them. What do you guys do?

I worry about painting first, then gluing, because the glue is mostly going to be bonding to a thin layer of paint and I don't want them to be fragile and snap off.

If using plastic glue put a small blob of blutac on the point of contact for the arm and shield before priming or prime or prime as normal and just scrape away the primer back to bare plastic at the connection point with your hobby knife; avoid painting over the relevant area (should be easy enough).

If using super glue, prime as normal, but when painting just don't go over the connection point.
