How to nail a mainly black colour scheme?

I recently finished building the DG army I had planned, and now it requires some paint.

Out of the lorefriendly subfactions is the Glooming Lords. My concern mainly lies in the fact that they are mostly black.

I've never used black as a basecolour before, and I was wondering if anybody has any tips or advice to keep the feeling of depth on
the black, without having the green distract too much.

Any advice welcome!

To clarify, this is an example of the scheme I'm looking for:

How to nail a mainly black colour scheme?

In reality black isn't really black(pure black is very rare colour naturally) so the outer layer of blacks needs to be greys starting from very dark and then light grey on sharp edges/spot lightnings.

That's the theory anyway My attempts are still quite basics but more layers of grey you use to highlight the better. Basically reverse of white where pure white is used only on very finest points of highlight.

How to nail a mainly black colour scheme?

As mentioned, black isn't really black in most cases.

From here you need to really be looking at your basic colour theory to decide what will work best with your chosen colour scheme.

As you've got Green/Yellow on your edging you make this really stand out by using a really dark Magenta/Violet tone, almost black, but not quite and then you use a lighter version for any edge highlights and real black in the absolute recesses.

Hope this helps.

Rik

How to nail a mainly black colour scheme?

Nothing is darker then black. (Theoreticla onyx paint or what it is called is out of this discussion.)

You can work adictivly, adding more colour like when you highlight. Or you can work substractivly where you remove colour. You can use a was for this.

I would recomend painting it in an almost black. Highlight it, and wash it with black. Perhaps highlight is as well. If your base colour has a little bit of colour tint in it (white black is a very dull grey) it will apear black when contrasting against other objects.

How to nail a mainly black colour scheme?

In general, start with a mid-to-dark grey base, wash with Nuln Oil, and highlight with a mid-to-light grey.

A couple quick flicks with a drybrush is usually good.

Also, not everyone ‘s cup of tea, but gloss sealer gives natural, crisp highlights to grey with black wash “black”.

I just use German grey from Vallejo, then wash with black. Maybe add a little black if it's too grey for you then do it.
