Guaranteed, everytime someone asks for advice, this is one of the main things. Do something with them, sand, bits of stone etc. Finish the model off. I will say also that you should always endeavour to apply paint smoothly (unless drybrushing) regardless of whether you're going for a battle worn look or not. The damaged look is achieved in the later processes (battle damage/weathering etc) not in the initial application of base colours.
