Using Vigilus Formations to field Ynnari

So, with the spoiler of the Imperial Fists Siegebreaker Cohort in the Vigilus book, I had three throughts;

* GW are gonna probs break 'em
* I'm even more bitter that Necrons aren't on Vigilus
* Hey, that would be a great way to model Ynnari!

Children of the Seventh Path - (1CP)
Specialized Detachment Stratagem
Use this stratagem when choosing your army. Pick a detachment of AELDARI that contains Yvraine, The Yncarne and/or The Visarch. All models in that detachment gain the YNNARI keyword.

Strength from Death (2CP)
Ynnari Stratagem
Use this stratagem when the thing happens near a YNNARI INFANTRY and/or HQ unit on your turn, you know what happens next, I'd rather not repeat the index.

Finally, a housekeeping rule for all three of the named HQ's would be added somewhere to ban Coven units and so on.

One caveat - I'm mainly trying to balance the acquisition of the Ynnari keyword, with a gesture to balance SfD because it's a dumb ability, but the stratagem needs an example pricing. Otherwise, critique away!

Using Vigilus Formations to field Ynnari

Hi, Phaeron Gukk! Welcome to the forum!

A few random thoughts:
* This seems like a diplomatic rules rather than a change that would address the main issues with ynnari.

* Under the current rules, AELDARI is not a valid faction keyword for a detachment. I assume these rules are meant to basically replace the Armies of the Reborn rules, at least in part, so some clarity on how you see that interaction working might be good.

* If we were to include a stratagem like Children of the Seventh Path, I'd probably prefer to see Yvraine, the Yncarne, and the Visarch *not* be a mandatory part of it. This would actually be an interesting way to let us field armies lead by generic ynnari autarchs and archons rather than having one of the three (very cool) SCs at-hand.

* Making Strength From Death a flat 2CP hurts the viability of casual ynnari lists even more than they're already hurting. It does nerf reapers and spears somewhat, but it also makes me never want to soulburst for an extra charge or psychic power.

*If you limit the viability of the ynnari rules by upping the cost too high, eventually people will just play "ynnari" with non-ynnari rules because the actual rules no longer have any appeal.

My personal preference for how to handle Ynnari? Whenever you would currently soulburst, you instead gain a "Whisper Token" (which is basically a command point that can only be spent on Soulburst stratagems). Then you allow ynnari units to use Soulburst stratagems which are basically the five different actions you can perform with a soulburst in the current rules. These would be:

2CP - Double your movement in the movement phase.
1CP/2CP - Cast an extra psychic power in the psychic phase. It costs 2CP instead of 1 if you've already (attempted to) cast it this turn.
3CP - Shoot a second time with a single unit at the end of the shooting phase.,
1CP - Reroll any or all dice after failing a charge in the charge phase.
3CP - Fight a second time with a single unit at the end of the fight phase.

And then Word of the Phoenix becomes "Gain 1 Whisper Token."

It gives a silver lining to losing your own units while still rewarding killing the enemy up close. It gets rid of out-of-sequence action confusion. It prevents you from running your shining spears away after they murder stuff. It feels more like other armies' equivalent mechanics because you're paying for abilities with command points (or something like them).

Using Vigilus Formations to field Ynnari

Thanks for the welcome!

To answer your main points:
Armies of the Reborn is a wobbly brick of a rule and keeps changing every FAQ/CA, so yes, (near-)full replacement. I was thinking the detachment would be Battleforged before applying the rule, but the whole "as you're picking your army" makes it hazy, good catch.

I kinda like the sub-resource, but that's Codex: Ynnari territory, and quite frankly there isn't enough to the sub-faction to warrant that (SM chapters, yeah yeah). Also, Whisper Tokens being like Command Points but not quite so is a little too messy for my liking.

Two further ideas:
I put up the up-front cost of the formation to 2/3CP
I don't know how the rules would handle it, but I'm tempted to streamline SfD into something like:

Strength from Death (2CP)
Ynnari Stratagem
Activate when the thing would happen. Choose a unit in range. When it would take one of the following actions: [___], it may immediately repeat that action, choosing new targets if desired. You may only target a unit with this stratagem once per round.

That's the vaguest rule in existence I know, but it gives you the idea. It cuts out out-of-sequence actions, and offers the opponent a chance to kill a unit that's been buffed with SfD before it can use it.
