Tau, Overwatch and Mass Hypnosis.

How do?

Just something I’m looking for clarity on from those that have the Tau Codex, as it’s a potentially cunning play for my GSC when facing Tau.

So as I know, Tau can do a supporting fire overwatch thing. Afraid I don’t know the right name. But I do know it’s pretty nasty.

And looking at Mass Hypnosis, I may have a sneaky (ish) way round it. The wording of Mass Hypnosis is as follows.

Mass Hypnosis Psychic Power wrote:
If manifested, select an enemy unit within 18” and visible to the psyker. Until the start of your next Psychic Phase, the target cannot fire overwatch, fights last in the Fight Phase even if it charged, and must subtract 1 from its hit rolls

So far, so clear. But, my questions is.....

If I cast it on a unit, can that unit still do the Tau Covering Fire, or does that remain Overwatch at all given times.

If it does prevent them from doing supporting fire, it opens up a sneaky tactic (spesh as my Warlord Abominant has the WT that means you can’t Overwatch him anyway).

Not looking to split hairs, just someone with the Tau Codex to weigh in.

"When an enemy unit declares a charge, a unit with this ability that is within 6" of one of the charging unit’s targets may fire Overwatch as if they were also targeted. A unit that does so cannot fire Overwatch again in this turn."

Whether the initial unit can fire overwatch is irrelevant. The unit that is mass hypnosised can't fire though via the Greater Good ability.

Ta for the wording.

Depending on my opponent’s deployment, I may be able to isolate three units, and only suffer OW from the one.

Example.

UNIT 1 <1-6”> UNIT 2 <1-6”> UNIT 3

Cast Mass Hypnosis on Unit 2. Abominant, already immune to Overwatch charges Unit 1 or Unit 3. Aberrants then charge the opposite. Only the one being charged by the Aberrants can give it Overwatch. Then if I want, something can charge Unit 2.

Hmmmm....
