Weathering black question

So I've started the venture of burning money again with a Primaris focused Black Templar army. To give the black more depth I'm looking at priming grey then giving it a white zenithal followed by washes of black. All standard stuff for someone like me who sucks as line highlighting but still wants the model to look good. My sticking point is the weathing. I love some heavy weathering as illustrated here:

It just helps give the model some nice defined edges while also adding ind some character.

But this leaves me with two questions:

1. Which paint color works best as a "primer" color for paint chips over black (or dark grey)?

2. What weathering powder color works best over black? I want to hit give the feet and ankles a dirtier look, but don't know a good color choice for it. I want to get that down so I can also tie it into my basing choice.

Thanks for the help!

Weathering black question

If you are going with a chipped paint look, primer is typically middle grey or somewhere near that, so you could do that and a metal for your chip weathering.

ClockworkZion wrote:
I want to get that down so I can also tie it into my basing choice.

I think you'd be better off deciding on your basing scheme first and then using a weathering powder that matches that. The beauty of a black scheme is that it will show pretty much any pigment save for black itself.

Weathering black question

for chipping I'd go with a mid grey or a mid grey metallic.

powder wise, as mentioned above, any type of powder should work, although I'd maybe avoid grey (concrete dust/urban) as it might end up looking like bad highlights, and green, which would probably look like mould. I like to create my own mix of dried mud and rust powder for my bases. it works well over dark surfaces.

Weathering black question

Thanks for the help! I usually use brown for chipping, but that only really works on lighter colors, and was a bit stuck, so the help is appreciated.
