What do you suppose they painted this?

Hey all

Just starting to put together my "plan of action" for repainting my early 90s Captain Tycho/Blood Angels Captain model, however I'm having trouble getting my head around painting a part of him.

I'll be painting him gold, similar to how the Sanguinary Guard are painted by GW/Duncan on Warhammer TV.

The model has one of those old metal backpacks with a cloak attached. It's this part I'm having trouble working out how to paint, specifically the outside of the cloak.

I'm using this photo as a reference as it's about the best close up photo of this model, painted by GW at the time, that I can find -

Whilst I can see GW painted the inside of the cloak red you can't see what they painted the other side with. I've looked around on the internet, and it seems GW never did show the back of this model - they have/had a habit of not showing models with their backs to camera...

There is a section on painting this model, in White Dwarf 139, but that's not all that helpful in this case, as it mostly concentrates on how the armour was painted. So I think I'm on my own on this one.

I keep thinking to paint it black, but I'm not sure that would look right as there will already be quite a bit of black on the model. I also don't think gold would be right as the armour and backpack will be gold. Nor would red be right as the inside is red and usually you have a colour on the inside of cloaks/robes that contrasts with the outside.

Anyone here have any insight on this, perhaps that unicorn photo, taken by GW, showing the back of that model, or any input on what might be the best colour to paint the back of the cloak?

Thanks in advance.

What do you suppose they painted this?

Thanks, that's fantastic. They might have at least straightened his banner out!

Surprised they painted the cloak red on both sides though. I guess I'll go with that, as I can't see anything else working. Dunno about the white stripe though, I might make that gold or yellow, if I can mask up the cloak properly to do it - no way I can do that freehand.

If you feel brave enough to freehand the lines a good idea can be too keep the cloaked backpack detached when painting. And pin it so you can easily slot it back in position.
If you mess it up then you can easily paint strip just the cloak.

I really love this old blood angels army. I become so happy with nostalgia just looking at it.
Im gonna go for that look when I come around painting my rogue trader models.

That OG captain isn't gold, Mike Mcvey painted it non metallic metal

I have an excerpt from my copy of the 40k eavy metal guide but it doesn't really go into detail on it

You may find how it was done in the codex angels of death

I will post up a pic of the page if you want?

What do you suppose they painted this?

Actually it wasn't Mike McVey. It was painted by a guy called Tim Prow, he details how it was done in White Dwarf 139, although he leaves out any details of the backpack/cloak. Mike McVey may have done the 2nd and current version of the Tycho model though as that was originally painted in the same or similar NMM style.

I know the original is not gold. I am however painting mine gold. Never liked that NMM look. I like the look of the 2nd and current version of Tycho as it's shown currently on GW's website, but I suspect that's a NMM also, and not easy to replicate, whereas the Sanguinary Guard look is.

I've actually considered using waterslide decal strips, seeing as the lines look fairly straight. Would make it far easier, in theory. They would at least give me a guide to paint over if necessary.

Rybrook wrote:
Seems to be the same model,

Indeed it is.

Here's the original page from White Dwarf 139, apparently written by Tim Prow. Note that it's written in the 1st person, indicating he painted the model. Curiously Mike McVey is on the contents page of that issue. I didn't know he was at GW that early in the 90s!

Opening page of that article -

And contents page of WD 139 -

Close up of the description of the article on that contents page -
