Varnish after base coat technique question

Hi I’ve seen a video from Sonicsledgehammer on YouTube where he talks about using munitorum varnish spray straight after a spread base coat.

My problem is I don’t and can’t use spray paints. So can I base coat my SM with Citadel base paint then use some Vallejo Matte Varnish and once that’s dried continue to paint the miniature???

You thoughts please
Many thanks

Re:Varnish after base coat technique question

I've painted on Vallejo matte varnish before and it worked fine for me with normal paints (base, layer, older GW paints and assorted stuff). I didn't notice any odd behavior and the varnish has a gritty enough surface that paint sticks to it just fine. I don't recall ever trying washes straight on varnish, though, so I have no idea if that works or not.

You should be careful not to let the varnish pool in recesses if you intend to further paint the model. You can be fairly careless when it's painted because the varnish dries clear and you don't get much of an optical distortion no matter how much varnish fills up the recesses. When you actually want to add more paint in there later, that's a different matter.
