Orcish Plaid

Hey all, here is a DnD mini I am working on. Wanted to go for a highlander/ Celtic feel for the orc and give the orc a woven kilt/skirt with a plaid pattern to match the skin tone.

It is just an ink job aligned to the natural weave of the chain-mail on the mini. Let me know how it looks! Please kindly.

https://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/1022857-Orcish%20Plaid.html?m=2

V/R
EJF

Not bad paint work, but I'd research actual tartans first, then pick one you like. When I paint tartans I usually do the checks, then add a very thin line of a different but complimentary colour closer to either then verticals or the horizontals, which enhances the tartan effect and makes it look less like plain checks.

Here is my second try to make it look more like a tartan.

And is white primer really that bad? The bottom right mini was painted over white, turned out OKAY?

https://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/1022957-Trollblood%20Tribe%20Brite%20WIP.html?m=2

https://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/1022958-Trollblood%20Tribe%20WIP.html?m=2

V/R
EJF

Your painting is not that bad for a beginner but I'd advise you to watch some Tutorials on how to do stuff.

First of all your Paintjobs are incredibly flat. You're using one color to Paint one section and only one color. Just a careful wash with a darker color to fill the recesses would go a Long way.

Yes, White Primer sucks for Most applications. Can't you see that it shines through everywhere?

Lastly, use less Paint. You're applying waaaay to thick of a coat. Thin your paints. Always thin your paints. To a point where they're Just a little thicker than water.

You dont have to do what they do, but it will help give you ideas, then you can come to your own conclusion what the best method would be based on the knowledge you gained from peoples video's.

But i agree you learn better doing stuff your self, but getting as much basic knowledge as you can first makes the whoole learning process easier.

Orcish Plaid

It depends, if you want a very bright area, like for example some blood or some thing, then white would make the red bright compared to if you used black it would be a darker red etc etc. So you could prime grey and prime white where the brighter ares of the model would be, but this is not really necessary but it is a method you can do.

But yeah grey is good, thats what i use.

EDIT - Example, you have a model upside down and then spray with black ( so it acts like a shadow ), and then white spray with the model facing upwards ( so acts like a highlight ).

Re:Orcish Plaid

I just have these post-apoc minis that I botched really bad with black primer:

I applied a white primer for a re-paint, but I was a little concerned about filling the relief details. Here, perhaps an olive drab primer would work better for the "G.I." feel I am trying to get.
