How to make wrecked bases

Building some IG Sentinels and came across this pic. I thought it would be pretty cool to try and make the bases more interesting. Resolution is crap so can't really make out the bases very well.

How would you guys make some wreck bases that Sentinels could be perched on?

Re:How to make wrecked bases

There's a couple of different ways you can do it. At the cheap end you can use bits of sprue and whatever's left over, plus some plasticard. GW (and other companies) sell basing kits, such as the Sector Imperialis Large Base Detail Kit, and some companies sell bases with the detail already on (example).

How to make wrecked bases

Ah base building. One of my favourite parts of the model making process. Literally anything can be used to make bases. You're only limited by your imagination. For rubble you want Cork board, sand, grit, small stones etc. You can use bits of wire or rod for rebar, and cut up sprues as mentioned before.

Re:How to make wrecked bases

To act as a base to stick everything else onto (bits of trashed vehicle kits, sand, grit, pieces of sprue, random plastic items from around the house and everything the folks here have mentioned- check your local dollar store or equivalent for items) I've used everything from thinned white glue (usually for flock, sand, etc), to Artist's medium gel (thicker, forms a really textured surface and sticks heavier things down) to spackle (the flexible kind for repairing drywall and the like).

Spread it on, stick some terrain improving bits and bob's your uncle.

I also use what's called plastic canvas from the hobby store- one 8.5" by 11" sheet has lasted me a very long time and can be used for everything from ruined gratings to door screenings to shop awnings, all torn down and trampled under the armored feet of your professional killers.

Basing can be great fun and is the next step in separating 'grey camo' (ie: unpainted figures) from painted and painted from based. The little details in your basing draw attention to the overall effect and the figure as it relates to its terrain.

Hope you have fun!

Re:How to make wrecked bases

Here are some I made a few months back for my custodes:

I got some cheap cork coasters, which I tore up into chunks for a starting point. Onto those I added bits of sprue (a cheap stand in for scattered bricks), kebab sticks (pipes and fence poles), plasticard (I tore up some of the edges with pliers to make it look like broken metal), some chopped up paperclips, etc.
I used a brick base stamp I had recently ordered to create a patch of broken brickwork.
The fence was made from part of the filter in my ovens range hood, which had recently broken. At least I got some use out of it.

Following that, I used white gap filler to smooth it out a little, and fill the holes. Then sprinked a few patches of sand over top to add some texture.

You can make all sorts of interesting bases from random bits of junk. It's actually a lot of fun.

After that it's just a matter of priming, then painting

Or just bits from you army you have left over.. Like your dudes are stepping over the decayed bodies of their predecessors!

My Craftworlders are basically eternaly stuck wading knee deep in toxic waste through the remnants of an imperial factory colony. It was foolishly placed on one of our maiden worlds we were going to cleanse and scavenge for any of our artefacts/spirit stones. However, the planet was already hit by someone else and all that remains is the ghostly abandoned husk of an imperial outpost so we are taking it on ourselves to root out whatever or whoever did the deed and kill our enemies as we step over the remains of some decaying ultramarines!

Used bits of cork, sand/grit, bits of sprue and SM bits I seem to have accumulated somehow despite not collecting Smm skulls from the skull set GW sells for some added Grim dark, and a squreed texture thingy from a local train modelling store to look like a slab of floor mosaic.
