Havent read the second though, but the first book gives good account of the Militarium Tempestus. They are hardened both physicially and mentally. A Tempestor was able to lead his scions to exterminate all the genestealers infesting some small town including a lictor which ambushed them. Later on he personally killed the broodlord with a little trick hes used to kill xeno warlords of all kinds. They are pretty badass and the into of that book showed them in their full glory.

Leviathan, first book from the Shield of Baal campaign.
