Necrons Or Tyranids?

I need help dakka users, I will give you my reasons and maybe you guys can help me choose my next army.

I am looking for a new army that is super easy to paint cause I am not interested in investing more time painting.
NOT a Hoard army I painted my share lol but Tyranids can be non horde so I know that
a mix of shooty and close combat but I'm ok if shooting is better.
decent model range with a few builds
an army that probably will continue to get decent rules or be supported model wise (getting rid of finecast)
lots of flavour and variety.

so with that what do you guys think?

Necrons Or Tyranids?

Between Necrons and Tyranids, from what you described, Necrons are super easy to paint, and have both solid shooting and some units with solid close combat capabilities. They've never had an edition where they are "bad", with being "OP" and some points and merely "bit better than average" at others. However, neither Necrons and Tyranids receive a lot of support from GW outside a few specific release windows, so they're about equal in that regard.

Re:Necrons Or Tyranids?

It's very hard to find an army easier to paint than Necrons. You can literally assemble the warrior bodies (do the arm\gun assemblies separately!), prime them black, drybrush with Necron Compound, paint the eyes, and glue in the arm\gun assemblies. This translates across a lot of the Necron line. You can make them as fancy or as simple as you want.

I do not play anymore so I can't really say how competitive they are.

Necrons Or Tyranids?

Painting tyranids can be done super easy if you go for a monocoloured style with a lot of washesh and/or dryrushing. I really really REALLY wish I painted mine like that. I did not.

I would recomend some form of brown or grey. Perhaps you can do a spot colour as patterns on the shells. Or have the talons in a different colour.

Necrons Or Tyranids?

Tyranids arent exactly a simple army to paint. They seem like it, but they look really ugly unless you do some highlighting tricks to make them look more "fleshy" and/or make their carapace armor plates really pop with edgework.

Necrons are probably THE easiest to paint, even easier than oldschool marines (the ones that lacked the tons of sigils, seals, etc the current ones have).

Gameplay wise though i would be cautious about necrons. The handful of people i know that have necrons dont like playing them in 8th, they all say theyre not terribly strong and relatively boring.
That could just be because theyre all Warrior/Immortal spammers at heart though.

Thanks for the advice, I'm leaning necrons, I'm not a unit spammer so might me my downfall no matter which army I choose. I love to field as many different models as I can. Somebody mentioned don't glue then arms on necrons before painting why is that?

ballzonya wrote:
Thanks for the advice, I'm leaning necrons, I'm not a unit spammer so might me my downfall no matter which army I choose. Somebody mentioned don't glue then arms on necrons before painting why is that?

I play Necrons and like the army's lore, but everyone is right in that they're pretty boring right now. The majority of units in the codex aren't really suitable for competitive lists. There are a number of rules issues that really need to be solved for the rest of the units to be more useful. Things like Triarch Praetorians not having a Dynasty keyword and therefore not being able to benefit from most HQ buffs, low movement Spyders theoretically supporting high movement Scarabs and Reanimation Protocols being mostly useless in common game sizes since an opponent focus firing a unit to death means they never get to roll to reanimate. There are other issues, but I don't want to sound like a complainer. They're fun for casual play, but not much fun for competitive play unless you're happy sticking with a very limited number of good units.

If you're looking for something with regular new model support, just get Marines. Necrons and Tyranids can go years without a new unit. Even with something like the Psychic Awakening series, 'Nids got no new model releases. For Necrons, my expectation is either nothing or maybe to have one of the resin HQs redone in plastic. I'd be surprised if we see actual new units.

That Forge World superheavy construct, the Tesseract vault, and the Cryptek that came with that one game.

So yeah, years between releases is pretty underballing it. Expect no new model support for a very long time.

Necrons Or Tyranids?

Necrons work great for casual play, and at lower points. They however have exactly 1 semi-viable competitive list at the moment.

That being said, Necrons shoot better than nids. Nids melee better than Crons.
Niether army has much finecast, and with contrast paints, both are probably REALLY fast to paint. But you will always have a high model count for nids unless you go to full nidzilla lists.

Necrons Or Tyranids?

I own both armies.

In the current Competitive Meta, Necrons are better.

Painting wise Necrons are the easiest to paint, though I have seen some wicked looking desert/water schemes. Also, Necrons are great army to try airbrushing on as you can OSL the gauss, engines, and eyes fairly easy.

Tyranids are not easy to paint IMO. They have lots of little recess, fleshy bits, spikes, carapace that needs feathering to look right.

Tyranids are hoard army, they can be Nidzilla as you describe but its not competitive right now.

Neither range has received a lot of new model love from GW. I think necrons have the forgebane cryptek model in the last 5 years. They also got a FW super heavy LoW but ill exclude that. Tyranids haven't gotten anything, just repackage boxes.

Both armies do have good model ranges, both armies have multiple builds, though probably mono build for each for Comp list. Sadly the Blood of Baal didn't give Tyranids enough of a boost to make them super competitive in this marine meta. Necrons have yet to get the PA update.

Necrons Have the Doom 6 list with immortals + flavor (Destroyers, Tomb Blades, Wraiths). They have actually done well against marine meta.

Tyranids have Swarmlord/Genestealer Kraken detachemnt with Kronos hive Guard. Take 3 flyrants. Granted this could change a bit with the Blood of Baal. Exocrines and maybe even Warriors might become prevalent but it wont win you a GT.

They both have very unique flavor/lore and play quite differently. Do you want to play Terminators or Zerg?
