I agree that memes can get out of hand, but the old rogue traider artwork already presented in the thread by others would suggest those artworks as the primary source, would it not? I know people often overdo it with stuff like this, but I don't think anyone ever took this seriously and it was almost certainly always considered satire was it not?

I mean it could also be argued that those old artworks are objectively really bad, but I think they are bad in an endearing way. At least for me part of the charme of the early stages of 40k comes primarily through the lore and those ridiculously exaggerated artworks. So I guess I don't care about those memes, even though they ridicule the faction I am primarily playing, because the artworks that spawned those memes are just part of the design history of my faction.

Also if we're being totally honest it has to be said that the current, modern custodes are also ridiculous in their own way in both their artwork and models. I mean I love them, but they are essentially better, even more beefy, utterly blinged out space marines with completely impractical swords that also shoot mini rockets.

Yes. The oil and leather pants predates youtube by several decades.

I mean this is just my subjective opinion, but I think from a lore perspective, chris wraights watchers of the throne alone was reason enough for gw to expand custodes more, given how good that novel was. Was it necessary for them to get their own army? No, not really. We already had elite space marines, namely the grey knights, but I also think it's awsome that they did and from a modelling perspective I think they released some of the best kits in recent years for the custodes, namely the Wardens kit and the Custodian Guard kit.
