Well first, there’s no “suppposed to” with the look. You can do them however you want them to look.
I for instance spray mine Death World Forest green and then work from there.

What final look do you want? Are you aiming at the on the box result? Or just a lighter look in general?

I’m sure many here can post up some great looking examples if you’d like ideas. Army Painter have a bone-coloured rattle-can, pretty sure GW still sell a white one (though I'm also pretty sure it'll be expensive). I get my spray-primers from Wal-Mart, personally. I sprayed like 40 poxwalkers in death guard green and used a good chunk of the can, i think i'll stick with it i just dont know what shades or other colors to do ontop of the green. Well, if you like the dark green base, you can build a lighter green on top and then an even lighter green highlight.

Or wash it with browns and purples and then work back up to the green.

One good thing about the Pox walkers, is would they all look uniform like Plague marines armour does? Not so much, so many variations in skin can really help.

With 40 of them, I’d be painting every repeat model differently..
Layer lighter greens over them (mixed as in an above post).
Then shade after, Athonian on them all, extra Agrax on 10, Nuln on 10, maybe Druchii Violet for the next 10, a s the last ones leave just the green wash.

The wash would tie the layers/dry brushing together for a dark and dirty look.
Or the other option is all the shading first, then to the dry brushing.
