The Emperor Will Not Be Happy When He Wakes Up...

The Emperor demanded to spread the Imperial Truth, which predicates itself on logic and reasoning, adding in technological and other scientific advancements. If and when he wakes up and sees the Ecclesiarchy, Sister of Battle, Black Templars, and other groups that worship him, do you think he would break or dissolve those orders? Would there be a revolt or do you think that they would obey his orders?

Re:The Emperor Will Not Be Happy When He Wakes Up...

Unlikely for several reasons.

The Emperor is not completely stupid, nor is he unaware of what transpires in the mortal realm. He may not have every detail of every event, but he is definitely not unaware that he is worshiped. Nor is he currently powerless to communicate with the people who rule his Imperium. He has, directly and indirectly, communicated with his people on multiple occasions. If him being worshiped was something he wanted to stop, he could have stopped it a long time ago. Clearly he sees the benefits of the arrangement as events have unfolded.

The Imperium would not have survived, and would not continue to survive, without the worship of the Emperor as a unifying force. Its literally the only thing that the people of the Imperium have in common with each other other than being human.

Squashing all religion was the Emperor's original plan, it failed. He knows this. So the best plan B is going to be a religion with him as a living god.

Re:The Emperor Will Not Be Happy When He Wakes Up...

He might not be happy with the situation, but trying to go all out on trying to completely restore the world of the Imperial Truth would probably lead to mass civil strife, heresy, and other nastiness within the Imperium that would make Chaos' job much easier. If he ever did come back, I think that his best bet would be to continue to accept his status as a god and use this status as a way to push the Imperium towards a more rational system (such as making the Mechanicus outside of Cawl actually start building new stuff again).

The Emperor Will Not Be Happy When He Wakes Up...

Trying to enforce his old ways back to Imperium would be quite impossible. See Imperium doesn't really worship the 30k Emperor, but rather their own idealised image of him.

And human nature is such, that if Emperor somehow was restored to his 30k self and got back spouting his "Imperial Truth" and forced the hidebound people of the Imperium to make a choice between the two they would choose "Emperor the Idol" over "Emperor the Man", even to their own detriment.

Not to mention all the people with fancy hats in places of power, whose wealth and power over the masses is based on their ability to act as the voice of their god. Which is much more easier for them to use for their own ends when the god can't naysay his supposed will.

It would be more than civil war, it would be Emperor on his own versus pretty much the entire Imperium.

Ah, but was that Emperor the man, or the slowly forming warp God caused by the fanatical worship of the untold billions of humans in the Imperium? Is that being truly the Emperor Girlyman knew, or a daemon aping him?

(I am sure given how terrible the new background is it is unambiguously the Emperor, which makes me sad.
The Emperor Will Not Be Happy When He Wakes Up...

To me, a game setting is a place to make your own stories. The older background was ambiguous, it was never clear what was true about the Emperor, Guilliman, Horus or any of the rest of it. The Black Library was a mysterious place and no one knew what was in there. Everything was filled with mysteries, and this was on purpose, because it was supposed to inspire you to create your own stories, and therefore your own version of the setting.

Your own answers to these questions will always be more satisfying for you than answers written by someone else, especially if you "made" those answers through playing the game.

I think the modern fiction answers too many questions, is too unambiguous and lets us see too clearly the motivations of characters in the galaxy, and this reduces the mystery and interest in the setting to me and closes off creative avenues that should have been left open. It also shrinks the galaxy down to a small cast of characters when it used to be this enormous place.

I could go on, but yeah, I really dislike these changes to the setting as a creative decision, even if they are technically executed well in terms of the written fiction.

I made a thread about it a while ago, if you want to have a read:
https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/0/780995.page
